The Theater of Heiner MŸller

The revised and enlarged edition of the first comprehensive English-language study of the work of Heiner Muller, widely regarded as Bertolt Brecht's spiritual heir and as one of the most important German playwrights of the twentieth century. "Kalb's quest to try and penetrate some of the surfaces of what he calls this 'glacially infuriating writer' is engrossing, and he negotiates his own ambivalences and reservations about Muller as theatre-maker and man with both honesty and adroitness...As a piece of scholarship [this] is a breathtaking tour de force." -Mary Luckhurst, New Theatre Quarterly

The Future of Philology

Philology, master science of the nineteenth century, has changed so radically over the course of the twentieth century that it is hardly recognizable in the twenty-first. Its scope has been transformed, its methodology contested, and its legitimacy called into doubt. Does it still make sense to speak institutionally and epistemologically of ‘philology’? Does this venerable title continue to signify a truly coherent field, and not a multitude of scattered currents and competing genealogies, differing national characteristics, and inconsistent methodologies? This volume collects answers by a range of young philologists, given at the 11th Annual Columbia University German Graduate Student C...

This book is about the ambition, in a set of paradigmatic writers of the twentieth century, to simultaneously enlist and break the spell of the real—their fascination with the spectacle of violence and suffering—and the difficulties involved in capturing this kind of excess by aesthetic means. The works at the center of this study—by Franz Kafka, Georges Bataille, Claude Simon, Peter Weiss, and Heiner Müller—zero in on scenes of agony, destruction, and death with an astonishing degree of precision and detail. The strange and troubling nature of the appeal engendered by these sights is the subject of The Pathos of the Real. Robert Buch shows that the spectacles of suffering conjured ...

The fifteen essays in this volume reflect the diversity of German studies in Britain and Ireland today. The German language itself is the focus of four studies, covering historical aspects of German and Yiddish, language pedagogy and controversial contemporary issues, such as the rise of Anglicisms in German and the language of second- and third-generation immigrants. Traditional literary philology is also well represented in six essays on prose writers and dramatists from the nineteenth century to the present day, but it is a traditional philology that has been much modified and enriched by the cultural and historical perspectives evident in the remaining five essays. These include psychoanalytical and contextual studies and embrace the historical development and elaboration of mass media technologies from radio to public-access cable TV.

First published in 1986, this book assesses the politics of the West German trade unions in the context of their larger role as major actors in the polity. By focusing on the historical realities of the labour movement both before and after 1945, the study explains the extent to which organized labour solidified and challenged the dominant structures of politics and authority. It examines the metalworkers’ union, the construction workers’ union, the printers’ union and the chemical workers’ union and shows how the industrial reality of each organisation helped shape its political outlook and strategic thinking. This book will be of particular interest to students of trade unions, industrial relations and political economy in West Germany.

Wild, Unforgettable Philosophy

  • Categories: Art

Through reading the early work of Walter Benjamin - up to and including the Trauerspiel book, Monad Rrenban brings forth a cohesive conception of the wild, unforgettable form, philosophy, as inherent in everything. Somewhat on the basis of existing philosophemes of Western metaphysics, Benjamin's well-known "esotericism" performs the transience of constraints of meaning. Both the form - free from duplicitous, authoritarian, and "rational" meaning - and the practice, of philosophy, enable production of the philosophical not only by so-called philosophers but also conceivably by everything - including art, poetry, and literature. In life and death, Walter Benjamin has and had the status of exile from departmental philosophy. Especially from Benjamin's early work, however, Monad Rrenban is able to elicit the force of the form, philosophy. Distinct in its analysis and depth of analysis, Wild, Unforgettable Philosophy in Early Works of Walter Benjamin elaborates the wild, unforgettable form - philosophy - in relation to language, the discipline and the practice of philosophy, criticism, and the politics of death.
