Anticipating Total War
The essays in Anticipating Total War explore the discourse on war in Germany and the United States between 1871 and 1914. The concept of "total war" provides the analytical focus. The essays reveal vigorous discussions of warfare in several forums among soldiers, statesmen, women's groups, and educators on both sides of the Atlantic. Predictions of long, cataclysmic wars were not uncommon in these discussions, while the involvement of German and American soldiers in colonial warfare suggested that future combat would not spare civilians. Despite these "anticipations of total war," virtually no one realized the practical implications in planning for war in the early twentieth century.

Flags of the German Empire
During the 47 years of existence of the German Empire the number of official flags grew into an organised and comprehensive flag-system. At the same time the new flag's symbol-ism was accepted speedily by the population. The new flag decorated festivities, flew over newly acquired protectorates. It was treasured and decorated greeting cards. In the course of time the colours became so deeply engrained in the conscience of the population, that a change of colours during the Weimar Republic received only little acceptance.
Exploring the Archive
The Ethnologisches Museum in Berlin holds more than 6,500 historical black-and-white photographs from Latin America. These images were produced between 1868 and 1936 and mainly depict ethnological and archaeological motifs, although some portray views of urban or natural landscapes. The contributions to this volume focus on particular series from this extensive archive. In doing so, they illustrate the enormous potential for research inherent within such “repositories of memory”, represent a diverse set of approaches and provide varied interpretations of historical photographs. The contributions focus on the contexts in which these images were produced and provide interpretations of the intentions behind some of the photographs. Moreover, they analyse the acquisition of these photographs and the manner in which they have been preserved and disseminated. Additionally, the contributions highlight the manners in which the images have been used and the impact of some of the formats in which the photographs were published.
