Characterization, Properties and Applications

This volume on iron-sulfur proteins includes chapters that describe the initial discovery of iron-sulfur proteins in the 1960s to elucidation of the roles of iron sulfur clusters as prosthetic groups of enzymes, such as the citric acid cycle enzyme, aconitase, and numerous other proteins, ranging from nitrogenase to DNA repair proteins. The capacity of iron sulfur clusters to accept and delocalize single electrons is explained by basic chemical principles, which illustrate why iron sulfur proteins are uniquely suitable for electron transport and other activities. Techniques used for detection and stabilization of iron-sulfur clusters, including EPR and Mossbauer spectroscopies, are discussed because they are important for characterizing unrecognized and elusive iron sulfur proteins. Recent insights into how nitrogenase works have arisen from multiple advances, described here, including studies of high-resolution crystal structures.

Oxidases, Dehydrogenases and Related Systems

The dynamic field of flavin and flavoprotein biochemistry has seen rapid advancement in recent years. This comprehensive two volume set provides an overview of all aspects of contemporary research in this important class of enzymes. Topics treated include flavoproteins involved in energy generation, signal transduction and electron transfer (including respiration); oxygen activation by flavoproteins; the biology and biochemistry of complex flavoproteins; flavin and flavoprotein photochemistry/photophysics as well as biotechnological applications of flavoproteins. Recent developments in this field include new structures (including those of large membrane-integral electron transfer complexes containing FMN or FAD), elucidation of the role of flavoproteins in cell signalling pathways (including both phototaxis and the circadian cycle) and important new insights into the reaction mechanisms of flavin-containing enzymes. This volume focussing on oxidases, dehydrogenases and related systems is an essential reference for all researchers in biochemistry, chemistry, photochemistry and photophysics working on flavoenzymes.

Toxicology studies the injurious effects of chemical and physical agents (including energy) on living organisms, observed as alterations in structure and function. The variety of injurious effects becomes apparent if we examine the major causes of death (Fl .I). Many of these diseases are caused or accelerated by exposure to toxic substances. Toxicity data from various bio-medical sciences document the effects of exposure to natural or artificial agents. Textbook Contents 1. Scope of Toxicology 2. Risk Assessment 3. Targets and Bio-Transformation 4. Toxicokinetics 5. Hemato- and Vascular Toxicity 6. Dermatotoxicity 7. Neurotoxicity 8. Hepatotoxicity 9. Nephrotoxicity 10. Techniques In Vivo & In Vitro 11 .
