  • Categories: Law

"Lawyers take pride in a professional tradition of representing unpopular clients, understanding it as a contribution to the rule of law and the practice of toleration in a polarized society. This does not mean that lawyers are fully insulated from criticism for the clients they represent. The seemingly intractable debate over accountability for representing nasty clients is in part the result of a deep, structural tension between the institutions and procedures of the legal system, and the underlying issues and controversies about which people disagree. Relative Danger

"Smashingly good, action-packed."—Publishers Weekly STARRED review "Every element of this rollicking adventure shines."—Booklist STARRED review In Pottsville, Pennsylvania, young Doug Pearce, just fired from his steady job in the brewery, has never strayed far from home. But he's always been fascinated by stories of his Uncle Russ, the family black sheep murdered in Singapore in 1948. In comes a letter from an old friend of his dead uncle inviting him to Toronto. On arrival, Doug learns that wealthy and glamorous Edna has an agenda: she's assembled enough clues to solve the murder and recover a legendary red diamond Russ was thought to be smuggling. Doug, nervous but game, agrees to play detective. But by the end of his first day in Casablanca, Doug knows he's made a mistake. While he meets people eager to help—a retired museum curator, a beautiful and self-absorbed heiress, and her elderly father, a colleague of Russell Pearce—it becomes clear that someone else is looking for the diamond.

This book contains all the known marriages in Marion County, Alabama for a 43-year period between 1887 and 1930. Actual images from the official marriage books from the Hamilton courthouse were examined, abstracted, and presented within these pages. Marion County was established in 1818 with the courthouse at Pikeville. In 1881, the county seat was moved to Hamilton. The courthouse burned in April of 1887 and all the earliest marriage records were destroyed. This volume begins with the records which were kept following the catastrophic fire of 1887. Grooms names are alphabetized and the book contains a full name bride's index. It is hoped this volume contributes to the body of knowledge for Marion County--an important county in Northwest Alabama.
