This volume presents current thought and criticism on evolutionary epistemology -- the evolution of knowledge and knowing. As the theme of the fourth T.C. Schneirla Conference held at Wichita State University, evolutionary epistemology was examined from several diverse areas of study including comparative, developmental, physiological, and cultural psychology as well as philosophy. Theories of the Evolution of Knowing addresses alternatives to the genetic determinism inherent in Donald Campbell's concept of genetic epistemology. Person-Environment Psychology
A variety of theoretical approaches to person-environment psychology has been developed over the years, representing a rich range of intellectual perspectives. This second edition links the past and present and looks toward the future in reviewing new directions and perspectives in person-environment psychology. Stated differently, the main thrust of this volume is to present contemporary models and perspectives that make some sensible predictions concerning the individual and the environment using the person-environment relationship. Within a person-environment framework, these models and perspectives are concerned with how people tend to influence environments and how environments reciprocally tend to influence people. Thus, this second edition presents new directions in person-environment psychology and the implications for theory, research, and application.
Vestibular System Part 2: Psychophysics, Applied Aspects and General Interpretations
The function of the vestibular system is not as obvious as those of vision, hearing, touch or smell. Vestibular dysfunction, however, is clearly apparent where lesions are present. It is probably for this reason that the vestibular sense was not discovered until the nineteenth century and that clinicians have continued to playa major role in basic vestibular research right up to the present. The relationship between basic and clinical research is certainly stronger in the vesti bular field than in that of tactile sensation, for instance, as testified by the work of clinicians as MENIERE, BREUER, BARANY, DEKLEIJN and FRENZEL. In this respect the situation is similar in vestibular physiology and in endocrinology, and for the same reason. This second part of the vestibular volume of the Handbook of Sensory Physio logy will be of interest to neurologists, otologists, neurosurgeons, ophthalmologists and physiotherapists on the one hand, and psychologists, physiologists, engineers and aviation specialists on the other. For a full understanding of Part 2, it is necessary to have assimilated the basic anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry of Part 1.

First published in 1986. This is volume 2 of Development and Structure o f the Body Image. Volume 1 presents a thorough review and analysis of the body image literature from 1969. The present volume details, in the main, research concerned with testing and evaluating a number of major theoretical concepts relating to body image which I have developed. The following major topics are considered: organization of the body image boundary; assignment of meaning to specific body areas; general body awareness; and distortions in body perception.
