Hier zählen Arbeit, Gehorsam und moralisches Verhalten. Doch Roberta träumt davon, eigene Kleider zu entwerfen, auch wenn sie genau weiß, dass das ein Traum bleiben wird. Zugleich liebt sie ihren Hof und die körperliche Arbeit in der Natur, in der sie sich zu Hause fühlt. Und dann gibt es da noch den Pfarrerssohn Wilhelm, ihren Freund aus Kindertagen. Die beiden verlieben sich ineinander. Wilhelm ist nicht nur für Roberta der Grund, im Dorf zu bleiben. Auch seine Mutter Gertrud bleibt wegen ihres Sohnes. Im Gegensatz zu Roberta hasst sie das Landleben und wünscht sich nichts mehr, als weggehen zu können, hinaus in die Welt. Bald sind beide Frauen gezwungen, ihr Leben zu überdenken und Entscheidungen zu fällen, die nicht nur für sie alles verändern.
