From Renaissance to Risorgimento, the Hebrew tombstones of Padua express the cultural currents of their age, in text and art. The inscriptions are mainly rhymed and metered poems, about life, love and faith, while the design and ornamentation of the actual stones reflect prevailing architectural and artistic tastes. Additionally, the inscriptions illuminate the society of Padua's Jews, and the social and cultural changes they underwent during the 330 years covered by this study. Thus these tombstones capture the flow of Italian Jewish culture from Renaissance to Baroque, and from the early modern to the modern era.

Shattered families and bleak everyday interiors at the heart of a hyper-realistic urban scenario. There are people who make up names and stories for themselves. Men who leave, fathers who leave, women who leave, women who stay and get in the way. People who are about to say I love you or the opposite and who incessantly ask themselves what in the world it means. Today's love and that of tomorrow. The "I don't knows." One, two escapes abroad. And ultimately a greeting. A promise. A docking. So that the search for oneself calms down for a moment, only to start up once more, working itself up again in a feverish stile like the frenetic lives that the author narrates without haste.

Four Hundred and Forty Steps to the Sea

On southern Italy's Amalfi coast, Santina is spending her final days at her home, a magnificent eighteenth-century palazzo. To decide its fate, she must confront the choices that led her here so long ago. In 1949, Positano is shaking off the dust of war. Young Santina takes domestic work in London as housekeeper to a British major and his creative, impulsive wife, Adeline. When they move to Positano, she raises their daughter as Adeline's mental health declines. Years pass while Santina navigates complicated feelings for a man who is much more than an employer -- and hides secrets that could shatter the only home she knows.

Famed for its natural beauty and rich history, Sardinia in 1968 is notorious, too, for the bandits who kidnap wealthy landowners for ransom. Eleven-year-old Alba Fresu's brother, and her father, Bruno, are abducted by criminals who mistake Bruno for a rich man. After a grueling journey through the countryside, the two are eventually released - but the experience leaves Alba shaken and unable to readjust to normal life, or to give voice to her inner turmoil. Accompanying her mother to cleaning jobs, Alba visits the villa of an eccentric Signora and touches the keys of a piano for the first time. The instrument's spell is immediate. During secret lessons, forbidden by her mother, Alba is at last able to express emotions too powerful for words alone.
