SMEs in the Digital Economy

Our small to medium enterprises (SMEs) will face the challenges and opportunities of the global trend towards digital, online and mobile technologies. However, many SMEs are not prepared to engage with these digital technologies, while others seem unwilling to embrace them. SMEs in the Digital Economy explores the many benefits, but also some of the risks, for SMEs in the digital economy. The overall message is that it is crucial to engage with the digital economy. Ignoring it is not an option. Owner-managers need to improve their knowledge and acquire the skills to effectively participate in the emerging digital market. This book contains ten chapters from a range of specialist authors. Each chapter has a unique but important message on the impact of the digital economy on SMEs in Australia and New Zealand, and the various ways in which SMEs are engaging in this economy. It reflects the diversity of issues and complexity of small business as an area for government, industry and academics seeking to shape effective policies to support this important sector.

Entrepreneurship, more specifically the formation of tech startups, is often attributed with economic growth and job creation due to their high-growth potential by many policy makers around the world. This link is widely debated in scientific literature, which does not necessarily seem to inform public policy. The City of Hamburg established a Next Media Initiative, focusing on media and IT industry related innovation to nurture the future development of this industry cluster with the help of high-growth ventures. This master thesis explores the composition of Hamburg's entrepreneurial ecosystem, local government efforts to facilitate its development and the (dis)connect between municipal innovation policy and academic literature.

A recent large-scale, multi-country quantitative assessment was undertaken into how SMEs are dealing with climate change in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Vietnam. Most respondents reported a high level of concern about climate change. Over 90 per cent of firms are currently undertaking measures to reduce emissions, albeit that they are typically simple steps such as reducing air conditioning and electricity, recycling or installing low-energy ...
