The Reach of the Republic of Letters: Literary and Learned Societies in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe (2 Vols.)
Present-day scholarship holds that the Italian academies were the model for the European literary and learned society. This volume questions the ‘Italian paradigm’ and discusses the literary and learned associations in Italy and Spain – explicitly called academies – as well as others in Germany, France, and the Netherlands. The flourishing of these organizations from the fifteenth century onwards coincided chronologically with the growth of performative literary culture, the technological innovation of the printing press, the establishment of early humanist networks, and the growing impact of classical and humanist ideas, concepts, and forms on vernacular culture. One of the questions this volume raises is whether and how these societies related to these developments and to the world of Learning and the Republic of Letters.

Sacred Skin: The Legend of St. Bartholomew in Spanish Art and Literature
Sacred Skin offers the first systematic evaluation of the dissemination and development of the cult of St. Bartholomew in Spain. Exploring the paradoxes of hagiographic representation and their ambivalent effect on the observer, the book focuses on literary and visual testimonies produced from the emergence of a distinctive vernacular voice through to the formalization of Bartholomew’s saintly identity and his transformation into a key expression of Iberian consciousness. Drawing on and extending advances in cultural criticism, particularly theories of selfhood and the complex ontology of the human body, its five chapters probe the evolution of hagiographic conventions, demonstrating how flaying poses a unique challenge to our understanding of the nature and meaning of identity. Federico GarcÃa Lorca
A study of Lorca's poetic trajectory. This volume is one of few surveys in English of the whole of Lorca's poetry and the first to concentrate entirely on self-consciousness, a subject which it sees as central to our understanding of the work of a poet writing in themost self-conscious of literary periods: the Modernist era. Focusing on poems which have the poet, art and creativity as their subject, or which draw attention at a formal level to issues of practice or style, it shows how these poems speak for or against contemporary aesthetic doctrine, thereby revealing the extent of the poet's allegiance to it and the positions he takes up in the process of making his own mark in the literary field. In so doing itcharts the development of a poet whose self-conscious engagement with his art offers an explanation as to why his work, in the space of little more than a decade and a half, should have been so singular and diverse.
