Early Roman Towns in Hispania Tarraconensis
Based upon the Roman Archaeology Conference of 2002, the book contains 17 up-to-date chapters written by the excavators of the main Roman towns of Hispania Tarraconensis, all translated into English. The authors concentrate on the earliest Roman phases of the towns and their relationship to pre-Roman developments. Towns treated include Emporion (Empuries), Tarragona, Iluro, Baetulo and Iesso, Saguntum (Arse), Valencia, Carthago Nova, Lucentum, Ilici and Ilunum, Pollentia and the Balearics, Labitolosa and the Pyrenees, Segeda, Numantia, Segobriga, Asturica and Legio, Bracara. An historical synthesis and discussion is provided by S. Keay. Heavily illustrated.
Urban Transformations in the Late Antique West: Materials, Agents, and Models
This volume is the fruit of a highly productive international research gathering academic and professional (field- and museum) colleagues to discuss new results and approaches, recent finds and alternative theoretical assessments of the period of transition and transformation of classical towns in Late Antiquity. Experts from an array of modern countries attended and presented to help compare and contrast critically archaeologies of diverse regions and to debate the qualities of the archaeology and the current modes of study. While a number of papers inevitably focused on evidence available for both Spain and Portugal, we were delighted to have a spread of contributions that extended the picture to other territories in the Late Roman West and Mediterranean. The emphasis was very much on the images presented by archaeology (rescue and research works, recent and past), but textual data were also brought into play by various contributors.

Ravenna and the Traditions of Late Antique and Early Byzantine Craftsmanship
In the last twenty years scholarship on late antique and early medieval Ravenna has resulted in a certain number of publications mainly focused on the fields of architecture, mosaics and archaeology. On the contrary, much less attention has been paid on labour – both manual and intellectual – as well as the structure of production and objects derived from manufacturing activities, despite the fact that Ravenna is the place which preserves the highest number of historical evidence among all centres of the late Roman Mediterranean. Its cultural heritage is vast and composite, ranging from papyri to inscriptions, from ivories to marbles, as well as luxury objects, pottery, and coins. Starting from concrete typologies of hand-manufactured goods existing in the Ravennate milieu, the book aims at exploring the multifaceted traditions of late antique and early Byzantine handicraft from the fourth to the eighth century AD. Its perspective is to pay attention more on patronage, social taste, acculturation, workers and the economic industry of production which supported the demand, circulation and distribution of artefacts, than on the artistic evaluation of the objects themselves.
