The Bals Publics at the Paris Opéra in the Eighteenth Century

The range of possibilities for what was termed a ball in eighteenth-century France was quite considerable. Throughout this colorful range of possibilities, the repertoire of dance styles and types was generally shared: danses figures, new as well as old, for couples; and group dances, among which the contredanse reigned supreme. There was another kind of ball, however, that has not yet been examined systematically by scholars. The bals publics held at the opera house in Paris were initiated not long after Louis XIV's d...

Britain’s Most Prolific Burglar

Harry Edward Vickers, aka Flannelfoot, was possibly Britain’s most successful ever burglar. Not financially - he stole cash and low-value items (even, bizarrely, false teeth!). The success was in his hundreds of burglaries spread over many years without being caught. The lives of career criminals are invariably dotted with prison sentences, but thanks to his caution and cunning, Flannelfoot operated night after night, year after year with an impunity which embarrassed the police. In the twenties and thirties, Londers were deserting the overcrowded capital for the burgeoning suburbs of ‘Metroland’. Flannelfoot was equally attracted to these areas, and one of his hallmarks was to steal a bi...

Presumed lost in the years since William Henry Paynter's death 40 years ago, this book is the first publication of Paynter's manuscript work on Cornish Witchcraft and folk magic. In the inter war years of the 1920s and '30s Paynter set about recording witch narratives and folklore in Cornwall and Devon, capturing stories and narratives of witchcraft and witch beliefs before they vanished as the 'old folks' died. Paynter was unable to find a publisher for his manuscript in 1939, and the papers were not among his archive when he died in 1976. The manuscript of Paynter's Cornish Witchcraft was recovered in 2009 and became available for study. In publishing this edition, Paynter's rich store of witch stories and folk beliefs becomes widely available for the first time.

It's 2024, on a timeline that diverged from yours in the late 1970s. "Going Forth" is a sequel to "Pawns." In 1990, in "Pawns", Pete, Persie, and Merly were in their mid-twenties. They're now about sixty. Little Mikey is one of their grandchildren. Life is very different now almost everyone in the world is gone, but for Mikey (who is six), it's just how life is - until the family decides that as a matter of survival it has to undertake a huge expedition. Thousands of miles in a post-apocalyptic world... As usual, the "Genre" information is nonsense...
