This is the story of the communities on Senja, from the past to the present. What did they look like in the old days? How have these communities changed and developed? How are they tackling the modern situation? Short texts and many photographs tell something of the history and variety on Senja – the communities, the scenery, the people. Ronny Trælvik is from the island Senja in Troms (Norway) and has written several books, including local history, humour, poetry, crime and biography.

“Magic” “doesn’t just occur in make-believe worlds or in the mind's eye. Some works in this book included magic of the authors’ mind in their writing. This book was composed of various pieces of wonderful writing that were poured into words by certain gifted authors. These short stories are the outcome of the writers' arrangement of their thoughts into a narrative and a twist for a semester project. Each and every author in this book presented their thoughts and stories related to a subject they like.

The German Hansa and Bergen 1100-1600

In the 13th and 14th centuries German Hansa merchants dominated North European maritime trade. They created trade settlements abroad and new towns in the Baltic. The Kontor in Bergen was the largest of these settlements and had ca. 1000 residents in winter, increasing to 2000 in summer. Its counterpart was a Norwegian state whose authority declined after 1319. The resulting military, administrative and judicial relations are unique in Northern Europe. The great expansion in the Bergen stockfish trade took place 1250-1320 and declined after the Black Death. Norwegian merchants and state officials found the Kontor presence problematic, but stockfish producing households between Bergen and the Barents Sea saw the trade as a source of economic welfare and better food security.
