The Most Popular Art Exhibition Ever!
There are some artists for whom 'popular' is a bit of a dirty word. Grayson Perry is not one of them. He thinks art shouldn't be an exclusive club for people who 'get' it, but for everyone - that's why his new show is called The Most Popular Art Exhibition Ever! This accompanying book contains all his latest works, in full colour - including his much-discussed 'Leave' and 'Remain' pots, and creations inspired by his recent TV series All Man - along with an introduction by Grayson, his sketches and his commentary on each piece, explaining the thinking behind them. The images and words here explore populism, celebrity, masculinity, identity, Britain today and Grayson himself. They invite us to look again at the things we think we know, and show us that nothing, not even Brexit, is black and white.
Sondra Perry
Artist Sondra Perry (b. 1986, USA) foregrounds the tools of digital production in her videos and performances to reflect critically on new technologies of representation and to remobilise their potential. Her work revolves around black American history and ways in which technology shapes identities, often with her own personal history as a point of departure. The exhibition at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery will be Perry’s first solo presentation of her work in Europe and continues the Serpentine’s engagement with her practice, which began with her moving image intervention for the 2016 Park Nights series. The exhibition will include a site-specific installation incorporating existing works.
Luchita Hurtado: I Live I Die I Will Be Reborn
Throughout her career, Hurtado has created an extensive body of paintings, drawings and prints that bear witness to a dedicated and intense engagement with the world around her. This is the ?rst comprehensive and fully-illustrated publication on the artist?s practice, which follows the trajectory of her work through a selection of newly-commissioned texts and images of all works in the exhibition. Sarah Lehrer-Graiwer has written a contextual survey of the artist?s career and its unique course; artist Andrea Bowers has written a text on ?The Equanimity of Luchita Hurtado?; Hurtado?s son, artist Matt Mullican, has written a series of short vignettes about his mother, whilst Barbara Stauffacher Solomon has provided a written response to an archival photograph, attesting to a lifelong friendship with Hurtado that has transcended their respective artistic practices.
