I was invited to join the Organizing Committee of the First International Conference on Complex Sciences: Theory and Applications (Complex 2009) as its ninth member. At that moment, eight distinguished colleagues, General Co-chairs Eugene Stanley and Gaoxi Xiao, Technical Co-chairs János Kertész and Bing-Hong Wang, Local Co-chairs Hengshan Wang and Hong-An Che, Publicity Team Shi Xiao and Yubo Wang, had spent hundreds of hours pushing the conference half way to its birth. Six Lectures on Dynamical Systems
This volume consists of six articles covering different facets of the mathematical theory of dynamical systems. The topics range from topological foundations through invariant manifolds, decoupling, perturbations and computations to control theory. All contributions are based on a sound mathematical analysis. Some of them provide detailed proofs while others are of a survey character. In any case, emphasis is put on motivation and guiding ideas. Many examples are included.The papers of this volume grew out of a tutorial workshop for graduate students in mathematics held at the University of Augsburg. Each of the contributions is self-contained and provides an in-depth insight into some topic of current interest in the mathematical theory of dynamical systems. The text is suitable for courses and seminars on a graduate student level.
World Congress of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering 2006
These proceedings of the World Congress 2006, the fourteenth conference in this series, offer a strong scientific program covering a wide range of issues and challenges which are currently present in Medical physics and Biomedical Engineering. About 2,500 peer reviewed contributions are presented in a six volume book, comprising 25 tracks, joint conferences and symposia, and including invited contributions from well known researchers in this field.
Unsolved Problems of Noise and Fluctuations
All papers in this proceedings volume were peer reviewed. The purview of this third conference was shifted toward biology and medicine. Among the topics covered were: the constructive role of noise in the central nervous system, neuronal networks, and sensory transduction (hearing in humans, photo- and electroreception in marine animals), encoding of information into nerve pulse trains, single molecules and noise (including single molecule detection and characterization by nanopores - molecular "Coulter counting"), concepts of noise in neurophysiology (randomness and order in brain and heart electrical activities under normal conditions and in pathology), the role of noise in genetic regulation and gene expression, biosensors, etc.
Bursty Human Dynamics
This book provides a comprehensive overview on emergent bursty patterns in the dynamics of human behaviour. It presents common and alternative understanding of the investigated phenomena, and points out open questions worthy of further investigations. The book is structured as follows. Patterns and Dynamics in Reactive Media
Ever since the seminal works on traveling waves and morphogenesis by Fisher, by Kolmogorov, Petrovski and Piscunov, and by Turing, scientists from many disciplines have been fascinated by questions concerning the formation of steady or dynamic patterns in reactive media. Contributions to this volume have been made by chemists, chemical engineers, mathematicians (both pure and applied), and physicists. The topics covered range from reports of experimental studies, through descriptions of numerical experiments, to rather abstract theoretical investigations, each exhibiting different aspects of a very diverse field.
