The objective of the study is to provide the Commission with a solid scientific knowledge base on the latest research results related to the mercury problem, by analysing and summarising research results of policy relevance. It should contribute to the objective of the Commission to enhance the Community Mercury Policy. It should also inform the preparatory work of the Commission for its participation in international negotiations to develop a multilateral environmental agreement on mercury, in line with the December 2008 Council Conclusions; these negotiations, held under the auspices of the UNEP, started in June 2010 and are expected to be completed by 2013.

The aim of this book is to encourage integration of the natural and social sciences with the policy and design-making community, and thereby develop a deeper understanding of complex environmental problems. Its fundamental themes are:• integrated modeling and assessment • complex, adaptive, hierarchical systems • ecosystem services • science and decision-making • ecosystem health and human health • quality of life and the distribution of wealth and resources. This book will act as a state of the art assessment of integrated environmental science and its relation to real world problem solving. It is aimed not only at the academic community, but also as a sourcebook for managers, policy makers, and the informed public. It deals both with the state of the science and the level of consensus among scientists on key environmental issues. The concepts underlying this book were developed at the 2nd EcoSummit workshop held in Halifax, Nova Scotia, June, 2000, with active participation from all delegates, and attempts to present their collective view.

Digital technologies also have the potential to shape climate change action. Green digital transformation can help countries adapt e¬ffectively to the impacts of climate change and create greener growth pathways. Doing this means combining a focus on digital transformation and inclusion with a strategic and sustainable use of digital technologies to address climate change. Green Digital Transformation: How to Sustainably Close the Digital Divide and Harness Digital Tools for Climate Action illuminates the channels through which digital technologies intersect with climate change, and it proposes a path to low-emissions applications of digital technologies to help countries mitigate and adapt to climate change.
