Reflecting on 50 Years
The year 2019 marks 50 years since the book Jesus Was Married was published by Ogden Kraut. Gospel Tangents sat down with Anne Wilde and David Patrick to discuss this book which has been influential among those groups who believe polygamy should still be practiced today. Anne was Ogden Kraut's secretary and assisted with publishing the book. She is also a founding member of Principle Voices, a group whose purpose is to counter anti-polygamy messages, build bridges between fundamentalist Mormon groups and outside communities, and for the decriminalization of polygamy. David Patrick currently serves as an apostle for Christ's Church (The Righteous Branch.) He adds modern scholarship which supports the idea that Jesus was married. Check out our conversation....

Don Bradley Discusses the Lost 116 Pages
In 1828, Martin Harris wanted to share the pages of the Book of Mormon that Joseph had dictated. Joseph reluctantly agreed, and Martin lost the pages. Who stole them? What stories were found on these pages? Historian Don Bradley has tried to reconstruct the pages by documenting what eyewitnesses said. Don thinks there were more pages than 116 that tradition says. Alex Baugh on Hawn's Mill Massacre
October 30th, 2019 marks 181 years since 17 Mormon men and boys were killed by a mob in Hawn's Mill, Missouri. For the rest of this month we will look at the events that led to this Halloween massacre with BYU professor Alex Baugh. Dr. Baugh is one of the best experts on the Mormon War of 1838 in Missouri and we will discuss not only the events that led to the Hawn's Mill Massacre, but other hostilities that occurred as early as 1832. BYU professor Dr. Jeffrey Chadwick has taught in the Holy Land for a couple of decades. He'll share with us the reasons why he thinks Jesus was born in December of 5 BC. Ezra Taft Benson on Communism, Bircherism, Civil Rights
Dr. Matt Harris came out with a new book in March 2019 called "Thunder from the Right." The book details the political and spiritual life of Ezra Taft Benson. Benson served as agriculture secretary under President Dwight Eisenhower in the 1950s and was a staunch anti-communist. We will also discuss Benson's dealings with FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, the John Birch Society, and his fiery general conference addresses in the 1960s.This is actually part 2 of our interview with Dr. Matt Harris that we recorded last year. Race & Religion Struggles at BYU 1965-1985
I'm excited to have Dr. Matt Harris back on the show. By the 1960s, race was a big topic of discussion not only in the nation, but at BYU as well. Dr. Harris will talk about the various ways government and civic organizations put pressure on BYU and the LDS Church over the race ban. Did the IRS really try to take away the Church's tax-exempt status? What role did sports protests against BYU affect Church leadership? Was there a problem with civil rights at BYU? And was there a problem with accreditation over the BYU law school? This is one of my favorite conversations to date, because some of the history involves people who are still living, including Elder Dallin Oaks and President Jimmy Carter!
