This book is a history of the marine fisheries of Southeast Asia. It takes as its central theme the movement of fisheries into new fishing grounds, particularly the diverse ecosystems that make up the seas of Southeast Asia. This process accelerated between the 1950s and 1970s in what the author calls the great fish race.
Brief Notes on Fisheries Production in the Southeast Asian Region
"This brief review of the situation of fisheries production in the Southeast Asian region is based on available statistical data. The main source of the statistical information used here is the 'Fishery Statistical Bulletin for the South China Sea area'. The first of this series of bulletins covering 1976 was published in 1978 by the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, which is a regional intergovernmental body, established in 1968, to assist the development of fisheries in regard to several technical aspects such as marine and inland capture, post-harvest technology, and aquaculture. Since the reliability of the numerical data submitted still presents problems, the above-mentioned Bulletin has had to be carefully compiled, using the figures collected by the fishery statistical units of the governments of the countries boardering [sic] the South China Sea. The Bulletin can therefore be considered a suitable source for analysis of fishery production in the region"--Taken from Introduction
