The Development of Singapore's Modern Media Industry provides a comprehensive account of the major media industries and related institutions in Singapore. The five major component of Singapore's mass media are analysed: the Press, television and radio broadcasting, film and cinema, advertising and public relations. A chronological perspective of each media is given and future directions are considered. The impact of policies and regulations governing Singapore's media and the socio-economic factors which have moulded them into what they are today are also discussed. Written primarily for media students, this book will help readers to understand the complex world of modern media. This book aims to meet the increasing demands for information on the mass media scene as Singapore strives to build up a pool of communication experts for its growing mass media industry. Presented in a straightforward manner, this textbook will serve as a vital reference for both media practitioners and mass communication students.

For several decades, the city-state of Singapore has been an international anomaly, combining an advanced, open economy with restrictions on civil liberties and press freedom. Freedom from the Pressanalyses the republic's media system, showing how it has been structured - like the rest of the political framework - to provide maximun freedom of manoeuvre for the People's Action Party (PAP) government. Cherian George assessed why the PAP's "freedom from the press" model has lasted longer than many other authoritarian systems. He suggests that one key factor has been the PAP's recognition that market forces could be harnessed as a way to tame journalism. Another counter-intuitive strategy is it...

Patrick Daniel is the Institute of Policy Studies' 11th S R Nathan Fellow for the Study of Singapore. This book is an edited collection of his three IPS-Nathan Lectures, delivered in February and March 2022, and includes highlights of his question-and-answer segments with our audience.Mr Daniel analyses the evolution of Singapore's legacy media from colonial times and examines how the country's unique history has shaped its media laws. In recent years, the Internet disrupted the business models of the legacy media and forced them to reinvent themselves in order to compete with big tech platforms. As for the proliferation of wilful misinformation and digital fraud around the world, the book examines whether the Internet and social media require more effective global governance. Mr Daniel concludes by looking into the future and outlining desired futures for Singapore and its legacy media. The IPS-Nathan Lecture series was launched in 2014 as part of the S R Nathan Fellowship for the Study of Singapore, named after Singapore's sixth and longest-serving president. It seeks to advance public understanding and discussion of issues of critical national interest for Singapore.

Media Education in Asia

Media education in Asia is a relatively young, but rapidly developing part of the curriculum. Research has been conducted and papers have been written on various issues concerning media education in Asia. The dominant models of media education in the world are broadly Western and most are drawn from English-speaking countries. The question is whether a similar pattern exists in Asia, where there may be differences in culture, heritage, beliefs, values, education policy, as well as curriculum and pedagogy. Are educators in Asia following the Western model in developing and implementing media education, or are they devising their own models? With this question in mind, this book sets out to understand the prevailing perspectives regarding media education in various Asian societies. While most debates about media education are carried out in Western contexts, this book hopes to provide a platform for readers to examine this issue in an Asian context.
