The argument of this book is addressed to those who desire to order their daily lives, in the homme, in the shop, in the factory, or on the farm, in conformity with the highest ethical standards, or in more familiar words, to live according to the will of God; and to them only. They constitute, I hope, a large proportion of mankind but be that as it ma, I know that there are at present among them many who are sorely perplexed in mind, and gravely disturbed in conscience, by the apparent contradiction between the precepts of ethics and the laws of economics. It is my earnest hope that in this book they mind some help towards the solution of their difficulties

This book has been written by an exile deprived by a German bomb of access to all but a fragment of his own library, and to practically the whole of his carefully collected memoranda, and is also denied by circumstances the use of any great library. The book still aims to discuss Anglo Russian Relations between 1689 and 1943.

This book is intended as a sequel to author’s earlier volume on The Remaking of Modern Europe (1789-1871), first published in 1909, and has been written in response to requests for a continuation of the narrative. It is offered as a preliminary survey of a large tract of country.
The Historiography of Gladstone and Disraeli
This book traces the often sharply differing perspectives historians have formed with regard to the key incidents in the careers of the two foremost politicians of the Victorian age – Gladstone and Disraeli. Following the parallel careers of both men, it focuses upon a series of contentious questions, ranging from why Disraeli opposed Corn Law repeal in 1846 and Gladstone abandoned his High Tory politics for Peelism, to whether Disraeli was ever an Imperialist and why Gladstone took up the cause of Irish Home Rule. By juxtaposing the contrasting interpretations advocated by historians, it brings home to students how history is a continually evolving subject in which every generation poses new questions, or reformulates answers to old ones – encouraging those studying the subject to realise that history is an ongoing dialogue to which they are called upon to contribute.
Sir Ernest Satow's Private Letters - Volume III, The Satow-Reay Correspondence (1907-1921)
This is the third volume in a series of private letters written by Sir Ernest Satow (1843-1929) to his close friends. Volume One comprises his letters to Japanologists William George Aston and Frederick Victor Dickins. Volume Two consists mainly of letters to and from John Harington Gubbins who had worked under Satow in Japan. In this third volume Satow mainly discusses international law (law of the sea in wartime, Versailles peace treaty etc.) and the current political situation in the UK and Europe, a far cry from his East Asian focus on Japan which monopolised Volume One, and was still evident in Volume Two. (Lord Reay had no experience of Japan in his distinguished career.) The expert foreword is by Dr. J.E. Hoare, formerly of H.M. Diplomatic Service and a Teaching Fellow at S.O.A.S.

The British Military Revolution of the 19th Century
From the Crimean War through the Second Boer War, the British Empire sought to solve the "Great Gun Question"--to harness improvements to ordnance, small arms, explosives and mechanization made possible by the Industrial Revolution. The British public played a surprising but overlooked role, offering myriad suggestions for improvements to the civilian-led War Office. Meanwhile, politicians and army leaders argued over control of the country's ground forces in a decades-long struggle that did not end until reforms of 1904 put the military under the Secretary of State for War. Following the debate in the press, voters put pressure on both Parliament and the War Office to modernize ordnance and military administration. The "Great Gun Question" was as much about weaponry as about who ultimately controlled military power. Drawing on ordnance committee records and contemporary news reports, this book fills a gap in the history of British military technology and army modernization prior to World War I.
