From Grassroots Activism to Disinformation
This book reflects on the role of social media in the past two decades in Southeast Asia. It traces the emergence of social media discourse in Southeast Asia, and its potential as a “liberation technology” in both democratizing and authoritarian states. It explains the growing decline in internet freedom and increasingly repressive and manipulative use of social media tools by governments, and argues that social media is now an essential platform for control. The contributors detail the increasing role of “disinformation” and “fake news” production in Southeast Asia, and how national governments are creating laws which attempt to address this trend, but which often exacerbate the situation of state control. From Grassroots Activism to Disinformation explores three main questions: How did social media begin as a vibrant space for grassroots activism to becoming a tool for disinformation? Who were the main actors in this transition: governments, citizens or the platforms themselves? Can reformists “reclaim” the digital public sphere? And if so, how?

Port Security and Preman Organizations in Indonesia
The global war on terrorism created pressure for Indonesia to improve its security measures for dealing with maritime terrorism. Following the 9/11 attacks and the 2002 Bali bombings, Indonesia has improved the security of its major ports and entered various international agreements to ensure its trading activities are not impeded. At the same time, in a bid to secure small ports and coastal areas in various parts of the country, preman—self-supporting, autonomous paramilitary—organizations began to play a greater role. This book explores the involvement of preman organizations in securing ports and coastlines in Jakarta, North Sulawesi, and the Riau Islands. The security of ports and coastal areas in the three provinces is of international importance because of their proximity to major sea lanes of communication. This book carefully maps out the tensions, contradictions, and implications of the use of preman organizations in the realization of Indonesia’s efforts to be a truly democratic civil society.
Netizenship, Activism and Online Community Transformation in Indonesia
Focusing on the concept of prudence as ethical groundwork for digital practices and activism, this book considers digital media expediency and populism as conflicting required experiences that lead digital citizens to discover activism. It highlights the importance of digital citizens’ experience of ‘being-in-the-digital sphere’ and encourages the reader to look at the dynamics of online movement as a part of a community’s search for significance between the online and offline realms of activism. Based on ethnographic research about the largest Indonesian online community, Kaskus, this book uses Indonesian digital citizenship as an example of online activism in a post-authoritarian state, with media viewed as a tool for democratic advancement and a catalyst for social movements among activists, students, and citizens both in Indonesia and further afield. Set at the intersection of media anthropology, sociology, Asian studies, and Citizenship studies, this book considers the shape and future of digital democracy in post-authoritarian state.
