This collection of autobiographical essays tells of Dr. Bard's childhood in Eastern Siberia, with a detour to Moscow and the Crimea. He moved to Shanghai in the mid-30s and spent his last school years there before moving to the University of Hong Kong to study medicine. His newly-acquired medical skills were invaluable in his years as a POW.
Voices from the Past
Through excerpts from the earliest English language newspapers in Hong Kong, accompanied by Solomon Bard's insightful comments, Voices From the Past provides unique glimpses into Hong Kong's history. Illustrated with interesting photographs, chiefly from the Hong Kong Museum of History's photographic library, the pages bring Hong Kong's colonial past vividly to life. The newspaper excerpts, in chronological order, are faithful to the original text, reproducing its quaint prose and spelling and even occasional errors. Focusing mainly on Hong Kong, the excerpts also touch on Macao, mainland China and the rest of the world. They reflect the changes over the years in language, style of writing, even in humour. Of special interest are the public responses to the many inventions which today we take for granted, such as electric lighting, the motor car, or the first attempts at flying. Most importantly, they reveal the gradual changes in Hong Kong's colonial attitudes as these slowly adjust to the new contemporary values and social and political changes.

The Jews first arrived in China during the Tang dynasty (618-907 AD) and settled as businessmen, civil servants and professionals. They assimilated into Chinese society and lost their Jewish character. The next wave came in the mid-19th century with the opening of the treaty ports and settled in Shanghai. Long Night’s Journey into Day

Constancy of Purpose
The Faculty of Medicine of the Universit of Hong Kong traces its origins back to the inauguration of the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese on 1 October, 1987, of which Dr Sun Yat-sen was one of the the first and most illustrious graduates, and it accordingly celebrates its centenary in 1987. This volume relates the development of the Faculty from its beginnings and commemorates the establishment of one of the oldest and most reputable medical schools in South East Asia. It is hoped that it will be of special attraction and appeal not only to those connected with the Faculty but also a much wider audience interested in the development of modern medical education in this region.
