Until now, scholars have had an inadequate picture of the scope and transmission of the oeuvre of Ludwig Senfl (c.1490-1543), one of the most important Renaissance composers of the German-speaking lands. The current publication presents an extraordinary and exceptionally comprehensive catalogue raisonne for this Renaissance composer. The Senfl Catalogue serves as an encyclopaedic research tool for further scholarly investigation: it not only presents a lively and coherent picture of Senfl's oeuvre, but also helps to explore the broader musical culture of his time. At the same time, the in-depth presentation and analysis of Senfl's music provides Early Music performers with new information on repertory that adds to the soundscape of the Renaissance.

In this volume of the NSE, all five-part motets by Ludwig Senfl are published for the first time. It contains Marian motets such as Mater digna Dei / Ave, sanctissima Maria, which reflect the deep Marian devotion at the court of Duke Wilhelm IV, psalm motets in which Senfl sometimes refers to Josquin Desprez in different ways (e.g. Miserere mei, Deus), or works like Qui prophetice prompsisti, whose Tertia pars Vita in ligno moritur was extraordinarily widespread in the 16th century. Jahrhunderts generell publiziert werden. In den Senfl-Studien 3 liegen die Schwerpunkte auf neuen Funden zu Senfls biographischer Kontextualisierung (räumlich wie auch in Bezug auf seine Netzwerke) sowie zur Überlieferung und Medialität seiner Werke. Zudem wird in Fallstudien die Bedeutung humanistischer Ideen für die Konzeption seiner Kompositionen und deren Verflechtung mit dem gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Leben seiner Zeit beleuchtet.

Senfls Liedsätze
Das von Ludwig Senfl überlieferte Liedschaffen ist mit rund 300 Sätzen das umfangreichste eines Komponisten aus dem 16. Jahrhundert. Sonja Tröster präsentiert dieses Œuvre in Detailstudien zu ausgewählten Kompositionen, Liedfamilien und -zyklen. Da Senfl als einer der experimentierfreudigsten Komponisten gilt, bildet dieser Bestand zudem die ideale Basis für eine neue Klassifikation des Liedschaffens der Zeit. Das von der Autorin entworfene Modell ist auf unterschiedliche Repertoires übertragbar und bietet eine Alternative zu der überkommenen, oft problematisierten Einteilung in "Hofweise" und "Volkslied". Es geht erstmals von der mehrstimmigen Faktur des Satzes aus und ermöglicht damit die Analyse der unterschiedlichen Optionen, eine neu geschaffene Melodie oder Liedvorlage in der Mehrstimmigkeit zu gestalten.
