The Image of Christ in Modern Art explores the challenges presented by the radical and rapid changes of artistic style in the 20th century to artists who wished to relate to traditional Christian imagery. In the 1930s David Jones said that he and his contemporaries were acutely conscious of ’the break’, by which he meant the fragmentation and loss of a once widely shared Christian narrative and set of images. In this highly illustrated book, Richard Harries looks at some of the artists associated with the birth of modernism such as Epstein and Rouault as well as those with a highly distinctive understanding of religion such as Chagall and Stanley Spencer. He discusses the revival of conf...

An exhibition intended to last a day as a backdrop to a performance of Messiaen's La Nativite du Seigneur at Winchester Cathedral had to be kept open for an entire month because of the extraordinary interest it generated among individuals, school groups and numerous others. Sophie Hacker, who works with 'found objects' - discarded pieces of wood, string, metal and skip finds, created nine stunning images depicting aspects of the Incarnation, arranged in an equilateral triangular sequence, and full of spiritual and theological symbolism. The exhibition, which was reviewed by Richard Harries in the "Church Times", went on tour to London, York, Salisbury, Guildford, Paris and various cities in North America. Here the nine images are featured in full colour and a guided tour with commentary is provided by the artist. Meditations by Roly Riem accompany each.

The Faith of Girls

Exploring the spirituality and faith of girls on the verge of adolescence, this book presents fresh insights into children's spirituality and their transition to adulthood. Phillips has listened to girls' voices speaking in depth on the themes of self, God, church, and world, and reflected on their experiences and understandings in the light of current psychological, philosophical and sociological thinking, all placed into dialogue with a feminist approach to contemporary theology and bible. Phillips offers 'wombing' as a metaphor for their transition to young adulthood, and suggests strategies faith communities might adopt to companion girls more effectively through the fragility of puberty. This book will appeal to all those exploring areas of youth ministry, pastoral care, Christian education, nurture and childhood studies, psychology and theology.
