S’inscrivant pleinement dans le centenaire de la Grande Guerre, cet ouvrage, recueil des actes du colloque qui s’est tenu à St-Remy-la-Calonne les 15 et 16 mai 2013, a pour objectif de focaliser l’attention sur l’iconographie de la Première Guerre mondiale, qu’elle soit d’époque (œuvres contemporaines) ou plus tardive (photographies de traces). L’analyse de ces images, témoins indirects de ce conflit, reflète une société révélatrice d’émotions, de sentiments ou encore de besoins. Certaines vérités cachées ou méconnues pourront alors être exhumées de la boue figée de tranchées oubliées. L’enjeu consiste ici à éclairer certaines représentations, certaines temporalités sous un jour nouveau. Nous pensons que les images, fragments d’un passé contemporain, indices d’un conflit sanctuarisé, peuvent, sciemment ou inconsciemment, contribuer à restituer ce lien de mémoire avec la réalité brutale, traduire et faire passer l’ineffable, l’indicible à travers le discours du présent.

Cet ouvrage, recueil des actes du colloque qui s’est tenu à St-Remy-la-Calonne (Meuse) le 16 mai 2014, fait suite à celui précédemment intitulé Les images de la Grande Guerre à l’épreuve du temps, consacré à l’iconographie de la Première Guerre mondiale sous diverses formes (filmiques, photographiques, de presse, picturales, archéologiques…). Ce nouvel opus a pour objectif d’examiner les lignes de front, visages marqués de la Première Guerre mondiale, des meurtrissures des corps à la trace des combats, tout ce qui fait mémoire par-delà les strates du temps et les abîmes de l’oubli. Entre patrimonialisation et mise en valeur, cent ans après, la ligne de front, paysage insolite, continue de nous interpeler.
