The origin of the Intelligent Virtual Agents conference dates from a successful workshop on Intelligent Virtual Environments held in Brighton at the 13th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI'98). Intelligent Virtual Agents
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Workshop on Intelligent Virtual Agents, IVA 2006. The book presents 24 revised full papers and 11 revised short papers together with 3 invited talks and the abstracts of 19 poster papers. The papers are organized in topical sections on social impact of IVAs, IVAs recognizing human behavior, human interpretation of IVA behavior, embodied conversational agents, characteristics of nonverbal behavior and more.

This volume began with a workshop of the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence held in 2001. This book constitutes the proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Intelligent Virtual Agents, IVA 2015, held in Delft, The Netherlands, in August 2015. The 11 full papers, 22 short papers, and 21 demo and poster papers accepted were carefully reviewed and selected from 70 submissions. Constructing and studying intelligent virtual agents requires knowledge , theories, methods, and tools from a wide range of fields such as computer science, psychology, cognitive sciences, communication, linguistics, interactive media, human-computer interaction, and artificial intelligence. The idea of a FAABS workshop was first conceived in 1998 at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, while the Agent Technology Development Group in the Advanced Architectures and Automation Branch (Code 588) was developing a prototype agent community to automate satellite ground operations. As IVA research develops, a growing number of application areas and pl- forms are also being researched. Interface agents are used as part of larger - plications, often on the Web. Education applications draw on virtual actors and virtual drama, while the advent of 3D mobile computing and the convergence of telephones and PDAs produce geographically-aware guides and mobile - tertainment applications.
