Not Vital

Not Vital: SCARCH is a survey of sculptural architect Not Vital's career, published on the occasion of a January 2020 exhibition at Hauser & Wirth Somerset. Vital has created and installed responsive works that are integrated into habitats and communities around the globe: in the Engadine region of his native Switzerland and across Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia. Edited and with texts by Olivier Renaud-Clément and Giorgia von Albertini, the book features Vital's prose and poems, and additional essays by Philip Jodidio and Tilla Theus. The book brings together the far-flung locations where the artist's works are situated and envisioned, and his projects and typologies are introduced by geographic groupings. Exhibition: Hauser & Wirth Somerset, Bruton, UK (25.01.-04.05.2020).

The Routledge Companion to African Diaspora Art History

  • Categories: Art

This is an authoritative companion that is global in scope, recognizing the presence of African Diaspora artists across the world. It is a bold and broad reframing of this neglected branch of art history, challenging dominant presumptions about the field. Diaspora pertains to the global scattering or dispersal of, in this instance, African peoples, as well as their patterns of movement from the mid twentieth century onwards. Chapters in this book emphasize the importance of cross-fertilization, interconnectedness, and intersectionality in the framing of African Diaspora art history. The book stresses the complexities of artists born within, or living and working within, the African continent...

Curating and the Legacies of Colonialism in Contemporary Iberia

  • Categories: Art

Combining postcolonial studies, curating and contemporary art, this book surveys the role played by artistic curatorship and contemporary art museums in the shaping of identities and cultural planning in contemporary Iberia. The book’s main hypothesis is that contemporary art has been pivotal in the construction of contemporary Iberia, a process marked by the attention paid (in heterogeneous, not always satisfactory ways) to the entanglement of the legacies of colonialism and the present-day status of Iberian territories as cosmopolitan societies now integrated in the European Union. We argue that, at least from the 1990s, curating emerged as a key activity for Iberian societies to display and configure an image of themselves as modern and fully integrated in the European cultural landscape. Such an image, however, had to cope with the legacies of colonialism and the profound socioeconomic transformations of these societies. This book is concerned with bringing together, while redefining and expanding, Iberian and curatorial studies.

Mathematics of Space

A new title in the Architectural Design series that explores the potential of computational mathematics in cutting-edge design Mathematics has always been a vital tool in the architect's trade, but the last fifteen years have seen a sharp rise in the power of computers and has led to computational abilities far beyond anything previously available. Modern design software and computing power have changed the traditional role of geometry in architecture and opened up new possibilities enabled by topology, non-Euclidean geometry, and other areas of mathematics. With insight from a top-notch list of contributors, including such notables as Philippe Morel and Fabien Scheurer, Mathematics in Space...

All the architects in this book deserve international recognition. The reality is, though, that few are household names. Over the last decade, awareness of the need for gender balance in architecture has gained traction. Within the profession, women remain underrepresented, underpromoted and underpaid. Failure to acknowledge women’s contribution to the built environment has perpetuated this cycle and impoverished us all. By showcasing 100 exceptional architects – who happen to be women – this book provides a flagship reference to inspire and support everyone working in the profession, no matter how they identify. Global in outlook, the book presents an equitable sample of architects fr...
