An almanac to the world of Gilles Peress' Whatever You Say, Say Nothing, delineating the decades of conflict in Northern Ireland In Annals of the North, New York-based photographer Gilles Peress (born 1946) and writer and lawyer Chris Klatell combine essays, stories, photographs, documents and testimonies to open up for the reader the complicated and contradictory storylines that emerged from the conflict in the North of Ireland. Weighed down by 800 years of colonization but only the size of Connecticut (with half its population), Northern Ireland provides a remarkably intimate stage set. Interweaving text and image, Annals of the Northexamines the multifaceted struggle between Irish Republicans and Nationalists, Protestant Unionists and Loyalists, and the imperial British, to explore broader themes of empire, retribution and betrayal, as well as the tense dialectic between the ordinary demands of everyday life and periodic explosions of violence. The book is at once wide-ranging yet deeply personal and political, alternately dense and humorous, legal and literary.

Jim Dine

This book is the catalog to Jim Dine's (born 1935) exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, covering four decades of his varied and prodigious output. Over the past years Dine has donated large personal selections of his art to museums across Europe and the US, including the British Museum, the Albertina in Vienna, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. One such gift to the Centre Pompidou, consisting of 24 paintings and sculptures from 1966 to the present, is the subject of this book. Featuring double-page reproductions of each work--covering Dine's major motifs including his hearts, bathrobes, birds, self-portraits and tools--as well his new 40-page interview with Centre Pompidou director Bernard Blistène (supplemented with archival photos), this book is the most detailed survey to date of one of the most important contemporary artists.

First coming to widespread attention in 2000, the work of Adel Abdessemed has been generally understood as an intuitive and searing response to the convulsions shaking the contemporary world in its religious, political, economic and moral aspects. The artist has been said to re-appropriate the primal powers of violence and destruction by creating braided aeroplanes, a rolled-up fuselage, burnt-out cars moulded in terra cotta, rows of barbed wire... Installations, performances, drawings, sculptures, videos, photos - Abdessemed employs multiple media to register the signs of violence scattered across the world, to capture the hubbub of history and render it in images. True as these views may b...
