MacArthur's Coalition

From 1942–1945 the Allies’ war in the Southwest Pacific was effectively a bilateral coalition between the United States and Australia under the command of General Douglas MacArthur. By charting the evolution of the military effectiveness of the US-Australian alliance, MacArthur’s Coalition puts the relationship between the United States and Australia at the center of the war against Japan. Drawing on new primary source material, Peter J. Dean has written the first substantial book-length treatment of the coalition as a combined military force. This expansive and ambitious book provides a fresh perspective on the Pacific War by providing a close-up, in-depth account of operations in the...

Arming the Free World

In this important study, Chester Pach traces the emergence of military assistance as a major instrument of contemporary American foreign policy. During the early Cold War, arms aid grew from a few country and regional programs into a worldwide effort with an annual cost of more than $1 billion. Pach analyzes the Truman administration's increasing reliance on arms aid--for Latin America, Greece and Turkey, China, and Western Europe--to contain Communist expansion during the late 1940s. He shows that a crucial event was the passage of the Mutual Defense Assistance Act of 1949, the progenitor of a long series of global, Cold War arms measures. Pach demonstrates that the main impetus for the sta...

General Walter Bedell Smith as Director of Central Intelligence, October 1950-February 1953

He served as General Smith's executive assistant when Smith was appointed Director of Central Intelligence in 1950 and was one of the original members of the Board of National Estimates. Montague argues that Smith was the first DCI with the skill and determination to implement the plan envisioned by JIC 239/5. This plan provided for a strong DCI who exercised authority over general intelligence community policy and the coordination of national estimates, but retaining the autonomy of the individual intelligence services in day-to-day operations. According to Montague, Smith's predecessors had failed. Souers was a caretaker. Vandenberg tried to gain total control of all intelligence operations, but was defeated. Hillenkoetter was indecisive and unable to press the case for centralization

America and Guerrilla Warfare

From South Carolina to South Vietnam, America's two hundred-year involvement in guerrilla warfare has been extensive and varied. America and Guerrilla Warfare analyzes conflicts in which Americans have participated in the role of, on the side of, or in opposition to guerrilla forces, providing a broad comparative and historical perspective on these types of engagements. Anthony James Joes examines nine case studies, ranging from the role of Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox, in driving Cornwallis to Yorktown and eventual surrender to the U.S. support of Afghan rebels that hastened the collapse of the Soviet Empire. He analyzes the origins of each conflict, traces American involvement, and seeks ...
