Tianxia in Comparative Perspectives

Tianxia—conventionally translated as “all-under-Heaven”—in everyday Chinese parlance simply means “the world.” But tianxia is also a geopolitical term found in canonical writings that has a deeper historical and philosophical significance. Although there are many understandings of tianxia in this literature, interpretations within the Chinese process cosmology generally begin with an ecological understanding of intra-national relations that acknowledge the mutuality and interdependence of all economic and political activity. This volume contextualizes the tianxia vision of geopolitical order within a variety of strategies drawn from a broad spectrum of cultures and peoples. The c...

Living Chinese Philosophy

In Living Chinese Philosophy, Roger T. Ames uses comparative cultural hermeneutics as a method for contrasting classical Greek ontology ("the science of being in itself") with classical Chinese "zoetology" ("the art of living"), which is made explicit in the Yijing 易經 or Book of Changes. Parmenides, Plato, and Aristotle give us a substance ontology grounded in "being qua being" or "being per se" (to on he on) that guarantees a permanent and unchanging subject as the substratum for the human experience. This substratum or essence includes its purpose for being (telos) and defines the "what-it-means-to-be-a-thing-of-this-kind" (eidos) of any particular thing, thus setting a closed, exclusi...

This collection of essays explores the resilience and relevance of an ancient yet still vital teaching, Confucianism, for the century ahead and beyond, finding in its many dimensions insights meaningful for the personal, ethical, socio-economic, and political challenges facing the global community and its best interests. Drawing on perspectives from the international scholarly community, the volume is multifaceted in its common goal of addressing contemporary issues in light of various Confucian teachings.

The Lupin Genome

The Lupin Genome

This book on lupin genomics primarily focuses on the narrow-leafed lupin (NLL), and details the genomic resources that have been developed and how they are currently being used to help advance both fundamental and applied research on NLL in areas ranging from its domestication to plant–microbe interactions and syntenic relationships between NLL and other legume crops. It also reports on genomic efforts being pursued with regard to other lupin crops. Lupins are important ecological ‘engineers’: they can colonise and thrive in low-nutrient soils due to their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen in symbiosis with bacteria and efficiently take up phosphorous. Recently, lupins have attracted...

Pests and Diseases Monitoring and Forecasting Algorithms, Technologies, and Applications

Plant pests and diseases cause an annual average of 40% global food failure addressed by FAO and more than 100 billion dollars in loss of forest and grass resources. Scientific prevention and control of pests and diseases in agriculture, forestry and grass is important to ensure food security, ecological and environmental safety, etc. At present, the accuracy of individual identification of agricultural, forestry and grass pests and diseases are low, making it difficult to achieve accurate outpost warning, occurrence environment monitoring and multiple pest and disease type differentiation, resulting in the inability to achieve early detection and control of pests and diseases. With the rapi...

Pharmacovigilance and Pharmacoepidemiology: Public Health and Safety

Pharmacovigilance has historically been based on spontaneous reports. The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines pharmacovigilance as "the science and activities relating to detection, assessment, understanding and prevention of adverse effects or any medicine-related problem" (WHO 2004). Pharmacoepidemiological studies can supplement the role of identification, as the spontaneous reporting of adverse drug reactions and conventional pharmacovigilance, can alert us to other, potentially more major, problems, medicine-related or otherwise.

The advances in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms and onboard sensors in the past few years have greatly increased our ability to monitor and map crops. The ability to register images at ultrahigh spatial resolution at any moment has made remote sensing techniques increasingly useful in crop management. These technologies have revolutionized the way in which remote sensing is applied in precision agriculture, allowing for decision-making in a matter of days instead of weeks. However, it is still necessary to continue research to improve and maximize the potential of UAV remote sensing in agriculture. This Special Issue of Remote Sensing includes different applications of UAV remote sensing for crop management, covering RGB, multispectral, hyperspectral and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor applications aboard UAVs. The papers reveal innovative techniques involving image analysis and cloud points. However, it should be emphasized that this Special Issue is a small sample of UAV applications in agriculture and that there is much more to investigate.
