East African When Stories
The East African Publishing House published three classic books in the 1960s on the origins of certain events among people and in the animal kingdom. The books have been long out-of-print and are now available again in re-issues by Heinemann Kenya. The stories are oral tales handed down the generations by the people living near Lake Victoria. In this first of the series, the four stories are 'How the Goat Became our Friend'; 'How the Hawk and the Crow Came to Hate Each Other'; 'How the Beans Came to Have a Black Sport on Them'; and 'How the Leopard Got His Spots', and 'How the Hyena Got an Ugly Coat'. Each story is illustrated with adrawing.
African Folktales
This children's storybook contains five African folktales. The first story explains How the Tortoise Got Its Rough Shell. The animals had a summit with the supreme being, Eke, in the sky. Greed and lack of altruism cost the Tortoise dearly, as he crash-landed onto the roof of his hut from the sky. His broken shells were mended by Snail, but the result was a tortoise with rough shells. Altruism and concern for others are the morals of this story. The second story which extols the pride of motherhood is on The Farmer Who Buried His Mother Alive. Donealot, the successful farmer, had no choice other than to bury his persistently sick mother in the evil forest at night with the help of his friend...
