The Origins of Music was first published in German in 1911. In this text Carl Stumpf set out a path-breaking hypothesis on the earliest musical sounds in human culture. Alongside his research in such diverse fields as classical philosophy, acoustics, and mathematics, Stumpf became one of the most influential psychologists of the late 19th century. He was the founding father of Gestalt psychology, and collaborated with William James, Edmund Husserl, and Wolfgang Köhler. This book was the culmination of more than 25 years of empirical and theoretical research in the field of music. In the first part, Stumpf discusses the origin and forms of musical activities as well as various existing theor...

The purpose of this book is to highlight Carl Stumpf’s contributions to philosophy and to assess some of the aspects of his work. This book is divided into four sections, and also includes a general introduction on Stumpf’s philosophy. The first section examines the historical sources of his philosophy, the second examines some of the central themes of his work and the third examines his relationship to other philosophers. The fourth section consists of notes taken by Husserl during Stumpf’s lectures on metaphysics in Halle, Stumpf’s introduction to the edition of his correspondence with Brentano, which he prepared in 1929, and some important letters pertaining to this correspondence. This book also provides a comprehensive bibliography of the works of Stumpf.

Correspondence (1882–1910)

James and Stumpf first met in Prague in 1882. James soon started corresponding with a “colleague with whose persons and whose ideas alike I feel so warm a sympathy.” With this, a lifelong epistolary friendship began. For 28 years until James’s death in 1910, Stumpf became James’s most important European correspondent. Besides psychological themes of great importance, such as the perception of space and of sound, the letters include commentary upon Stumpf’s (Tonpsychologie) and James’s main books (The Principles of Psychology, The Varieties of Religious Experience), and many other works. The two friends also exchange views concerning other scholars, religious faith and metaphysica...

Illuminating the author's unshakeable faith in the power of music in people's lives, this text draws upon the fields of literature, philosophy, psychology, and religious thought to highlight the importance of music in an increasingly chaotic and techno-centric world. Issues such as the folly of the work/play mindset and the relationship of music to time's inexorable passage are discussed, as are many ways in which music can lead to a deeper understanding of the human condition. The superficiality of the market-driven world of professional pop music and the ineffectual approach of traditional music education are also explored.

Letters to Imogene

Three career Army officers, the author’s father, grandfather and uncle, are thrust into the global struggle to save the world from Hitler’s Nazi empire. United by their love of Imogene—daughter, sister, and wife—their letters to her and her replies chronicle the personal side of war. Imogene’s father, Major General Donald Stroh, initially the assistant commander of the 9th Infantry Division, later commanded the 8th and 106th Infantry Divisions. Her husband, Lieutenant Colonel Robert Stumpf, commanded a battalion in the 9th and later, a regiment in the 106th. Their campaigns began in North Africa in late 1942 and concluded in Germany nearly three years later. Imogene’s brother, Ca...

Carl Stumpf (1848-1936) was a German philosopher and psychologist and a visionary and important academic. During his lifetime, he ranked among the most prominent scientists of his time. Stumpf's intention, as evident in his book, Tone Psychology, was to investigate the phenomenon of tone sensation in order to understand the general psychic functions and processes underlying the perception of sound and music. It could be argued that modern music psychology has lost or perhaps ignored the epistemological basis that Carl Stumpf developed in his Tone Psychology. To gain a confident psychological basis, the relevance of Stumpf's deliberations on music psychology cannot be overestimated. Analyses ...
