Cow Up a Tree

Western societies are calling for speedy change in agriculture and the agrifood industries to incorporate new quality criteria into the goods they produce. To promote these changes what scientists must develop are not universally implementable technical solutions, but self-diagnosis methods to be used by agricultural producers and their advisors. They also need to evolve new procedures for research intervention in collective organisations. There is a need for new individual and collective learning and organisation processes based on transdisciplinarity and co-learning among researchers, development professionals, decision makers and farmers. In this book, scientists from ten industrialised countries describe and reflect on their theoretical and practical experience of the different forms of learning they experimented with.

Rosalie Gascoigne (1917–1999) was a highly regarded Australian artist whose assemblages of found materials embraced landscape, still life, minimalism, arte povera and installations. She was 57 when she had her first exhibition. Behind this late coming-out lay a long and unusual preparation in looking at nature for its aesthetic qualities, collecting found objects, making flower arrangements and practising ikebana. Her art found an appreciative audience from the start. She was a people person, and it pleased her that through her exhibiting career of 25 years, her works were acquired by people of all ages, interests and backgrounds, as well as by the major public institutions on both sides of the Tasman Sea.

The idea of the Tropics has always been a cultural construct - and not just beyond the Tropics themselves. This catalogue takes European projections of the Tropics as its point of departure, and at the same time, aims to reflect on this construct. Two hundred exhibits from Africa, Asia, Oceania and tropical America from the collections of the Museum of Ethnology in Berlin enter into a dialogue with works by forty contemporary artists from Brazil, South America, Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia. This project is the first time that such a bridge has been built between works created in pre-modern times and contemporary works. The pre-modern art shows us the Tropics before they lost their inno...
