Drawing on interviews and focus group discussions with young people, this topical report explores the motivations, values and meanings that underage young people (aged 14 to 17 years) ascribe to heavy single-session drinking in unsupervised locations. It considers the social and health-related behaviours, including additional risk-taking behaviours, that may be associated with such drinking and examines how behaviour differs among contrasting groups of young people according to their age, gender, ethnicity, socio-economic status and rural or urban residence. The study identifies that those at the younger end of the group are at greatest risk from the effects of binge-drinking, and are naive ...

There is evidence that a distinct pattern of alcohol consumption is emerging across the world and is a cause for concern because of its relationship with a range of health and social problems. Its visibility, particularly its high involvement of young people, makes this not only an issue for public safety and order in many countries, but also a highly contentious and politicized subject. This book examines the rapid and heavy drinking behavior by young people, described in a number of countries, positioning it within its appropriate social, historical and cultural contexts. The book argues in favor of a new term, “extreme drinking,” to fully encapsulate the many facets of this behavior, ...

This Guide aims to provide information for those working with young people, by sharing young parents' views and experiences from Young People in Focus's research into 'planned' teenage pregnancy. The main aim is to help gain more awareness, understanding and insight into the reasons behind 'planned' teenage pregnancy. The real-life quotes can be used with young people to open up discussion about what it's like to become a parent, and help them think about whether having a baby is what they really want.

Birth and Death in British Culture

Why discuss birth and death when they lie outside discourse? And why look at them together when they are so much unlike each other, one the moment of fresh beginnings, joys, and the relative certainties of existence, the other the moment of life’s end, grief, and the relative uncertainties of non-existence? Because it turns out that both events, while virtually unrepresentable, have spawned a host of representations, narratives, rites, and attempts at making sense of them; and because they may have more similarities than appears at first sight. The 13 interdisciplinary articles collected in this volume prove that looking at the two phenomena in tandem throws into sharp relief the distinct patterns and functions of each, while also highlighting some of the fundamental historical developments, cultural functions, and socio-political issues shared by both. The contributions take stock of the discourses of birth and death prevalent in British (and Western) culture, probing into the way the two phenomena have been subjected to strategies of medialisation, commodification, and bio-politics.
