Psychoanalysis and Holocaust Testimony

Psychoanalytic work with socially traumatised patients is an increasingly popular vocation, but remains extremely demanding and little covered in the literature. In Psychoanalysis and Holocaust Testimony, a range of contributors draw upon their own clinical work, and on research findings from work with seriously disturbed Holocaust survivors, to illuminate how best to conduct clinical work with such patients in order to maximise the chances of a positive outcome, and to reflect transferred trauma for the clinician. Psychoanalysis and Holocaust Testimony closely examines the phenomenology of destruction inherent in the discourse of extreme traumatization, focusing on a particular case study: ...

Contemporary Jewish Writing in Europe

With contributions from a dozen American and European scholars, this volume presents an overview of Jewish writing in post--World War II Europe. Striking a balance between close readings of individual texts and general surveys of larger movements and underlying themes, the essays portray Jewish authors across Europe as writers and intellectuals of multiple affiliations and hybrid identities. Aimed at a general readership and guided by the idea of constructing bridges across national cultures, this book maps for English-speaking readers the productivity and diversity of Jewish writers and writing that has marked a revitalization of Jewish culture in France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Hungary, Poland, and Russia.

Never Again: Echoes of the Holocaust As Understood Through Film

Much has been written and structures have been erected to commemorate the lives lost in the Holocaust. This book will focus upon what “living” has meant for those who survived. Through a series of case studies based upon carefully selected films, the ongoing impact of the traumas suffered by first- and second-generation survivors are carefully examined. Almost without exception, these films were either written, directed, or starred in a lead role a first- or second-generation survivor and, therefore, present an informed representation of what these people continue to experience. Film has come to be the most successful means of delivering the message of the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel said that the worst of alternatives would be that the message of the Holocaust would be delivered with “nothing changed.” Hopefully, the message delivered by this book and its case studies will make some small contribution toward a realization of its title, Never Again!

Migration and Multiculturalism in Scandinavia

Scandinavian societies have historically, and problematically, been understood as homogenous, when in fact they have a long history of ethnic and cultural pluralism due to colonialism and territorial conquest. Amid global tensions around border security and refugee crises, these powerful conversations with nineteen scholars about the past, present, and future of a region in transition capture the current cultural moment.

This volume opens up new ground in the field of social representations research by focusing on contexts involving mass violence, rather than on relatively stable societies. Representations of violence are not only symbolic, but in the first place affective and bodily, especially when it comes to traumatic experiences. Exploring the responses of researchers, educators, students and practitioners to long-term engagement with this emotionally demanding material, the book considers how empathic knowledge can make working in this field more bearable and deepen our understanding of the Holocaust, genocide, war, and mass political violence. Bringing together international contributors from a range ...

The project comprises over seventy cases discussed by more than five hundred experienced psychoanalysts over the course of sixty workshops.
