Longlining is becoming increasingly more important as a method of fishing commercially for certain prime species of fish- particulary in the face of declining stocks. Longlining is much more selective that any other form of fishing and is thus more environmentally acceptable. Furthermore, longlining allows for the targeting of particular prime species and fish caught by this method are less damaged and thus hold a higher value. Despite the many major benefits of longlining, there are, as yet few books which address the technical and economic aspects of this method of commercial fishing. Written by an expert, this new book describes the principles and development of longlining fishing and explains the action of chemical sensing in fish and their behaviour towards baited hooks. Details of gear construction, the operation cycle for longlines, longline vessels and the different principles of mechanised baiting and on-board gear handling are provided and typical examples are given. The target species, gear parameters and catching efficiency, and the selective properties of longline gear are fully discussed whilst a concluding chapter compares longlining with other fishing methods.

This volume includes 33 peer-reviewed papers presented at the Sixth Conference on Fish Telemetry held in Europe (Sesimbra, Portugal, 5-11 June 2005). The papers focus on migration and behaviour, species conservation and habitat rehabilitation, human impacts and fisheries, telemetry methodology and new technology. This book is aimed at scientists and engineers actively involved in aquatic telemetry projects.
This volume provides a selection of the most significant papers presented at the Fourth Conference on Fish Telemetry in Europe, in Trondheim, Norway, in 2001. Papers are focused on migratory patterns and habitat utilisation, social behaviour, physiological ecology, fisheries management, effects of human impact on fish populations, aquaculture and methodology, and new technology. This book is aimed at scientists and engineers actively involved in aquatic telemetry projects, aquatic biologists (marine and freshwater), fisheries biologists and managers.
The FAO Technical Working Group (TWG) on reduction of incidental catch of seabirds in longline fisheries reviewed three background papers prepared for the meeting dealing with longline fishing technology and effort, the interaction of seabirds during fishing operations and how incidental catch of seabirds can be reduced by using various mitagation measures. It was decided that the content of these background papers should be compiled into one publication to be used as reference material for elaborating technical guidelines and the international plan of action.
This volume provides a selection of the most significant papers presented at the Second Conference on Fish Telemetry in Europe in La Rochelle, France, in April 1997. The conference was attended by 100 scientists from 18 countries. The contributions are grouped under the following headings: Methodology and New Developments, Tagging Procedures, Behavioural and Physiological Ecology, Fish Migration, Stock Management and Conservation. Particular emphasis was put on tag miniaturisation, multiple functions and sampling strategies. Papers concerned the effects of tags on fish for consolidating behavioural or original physiological investigations noticeably more open to the marine environment. Methods were essentially applied to study the relationships between fish and their natural environment. Besides providing up-to-date information on the state of fish telemetry, the book illustrates the increase in spatial and temporal scales and the number of tracked fish which gives a statistical basis for field study in behavioural ecology.
