The Hare Krishna Movement

Dancing and chanting with their shaven heads and saffron robes, Hare Krishnas presented the most visible face of any of the eastern religions transplanted to the West during the sixties and seventies. Yet few people know much about them. This comprehensive study includes more than twenty contributions from members, ex-members, and academics who have followed the Hare Krishna movement for years. Since the death of its founder, the movement, also known as the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), has experienced debates over the roles of authority, heresy, and dissent, which have led to the development of several splinter movements. There is a growing women's rights movement and a highly publicized child abuse scandal. Providing a privileged look at the people and issues shaping ISKCON, this volume also offers insight into the complex factors surrounding the emergence of religious traditions, including early Christianity, as well as a glimpse of the original seeds and the germinating stages of a religious tradition putting down roots in foreign soil.

Krishna On Yoga

Yoga means to link. Links with the bond of love are the strongest. Therefore yoga in real terms means 'bhakti' or the yoga of devotion which is the summit of all yoga disciplines. Karma-yoga, gyana-yoga and bhakti are the three primary levels of yoga practice. Karma-yoga does not award liberation from 'samsara' or the repeated cycle of birth and death. Gyana-yoga does award a type of liberation but generally that liberation is temporary and destroys any type of divine relationship or service. Bhakti is natural and also eternally existent within the heart of the very soul and therefore far above all other yoga disciplines and goals. When the covering of the material energy is removed by regular sadhana then the dormant divine service attitude is revealed without extraneous endeavors for perfection. Once realized this knowledge will bestow the most blissful existence on the practitioner. Once one tastes the pleasure of devotional service in bhakti-yoga he feels as if even the so-called pleasure of impersonal liberation to be like a drop of water, compared to the ocean of transcendental bliss obtained in pure loving sentiments for the Supreme Absolute Personality of Godhead.

This selection is quite easy to read and gives a good idea on the philosophy and workings of modern Buddhism and it's relationship with the impersonal non-dual teachings of Sri Shankaracharya. The superiority of Dualism and the authenticity of Vaishnavism is explicit throughout the text. By BV Avadoot Swami ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Before beginning this short book we must acknowledge those who have given impetus and inspiration in presenting Will The Real Buddha Please Stand Up. The holy master who first ordered that an article be written on the history of monism and voidism was the most far-seeing and deep-thinking spiritual revolutionary, His Holiness Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur. His disciple,...
