This book presents the outcomes of four years of educational research in the EU-supported project called ROLE (Responsive Online Learning Environments). ROLE technology is centered around the concept of self-regulated learning that creates responsible learners, who are capable of critical thinking and able to plan their own learning processes. Numerous studies indicate that learning is most effective in terms of persistency when it addresses the whole person rather than merely the intellect. A set of promotive activities that foster significant learning have been extensively researched in classroom settings. The major scientific goal of this work is to investigate whether and how promotive activities may be applied in technology-enhanced learning settings. Besides transferring existing activity patterns to the online context, this work presents new opportunities that could only emerge with technology enhancement. This work draws up general recommendations and provides practical examples. The main fields of interest are: motivational aspects, peer review, and «active listening» with written means of online communication.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of HCI and Usability for e-Inclusion, held as the 5th Symposium of the Workgroup Human-Computer Interaction and Usability Engineering of the Austrian Computer Society, USAB 2009, in Linz, Austria, in November 2009. Das 2004 gestartete Strategieprojekt "Neue Medien in der Lehre an der Universität Wien" - geleitet vom Vizerektorat für Lehre und Internationales - zielt auf die universitätsweite und qualitätsvolle Integration von eLearning in die Lehre im Sinn von Blended Learning. Die Verknüpfung von eLearning mit der Implementierung der europäischen Studienarchitektur wird als wichtige Voraussetzung für die nachhaltige Verankerung von neuen Medien in der Lehre betrachtet. Der Band dokumentiert die Konzeptualisierung, Entwicklung und Umsetzung der eLearning-Strategie der Universität Wien, die zu den ältesten Universitäten im deutschen Sprach- und Kulturraum und zu den größten Universitäten Zentraleuropas gehört. Er beinhaltet 15 Beiträge, die der Darstellung von eLearning-bezogenen Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprojekten an der Universität Wien gewidmet sind.
