Myocarditis Cardiomyopathy
Primary myocardial disease, nowadays referred to as congestive or, more re cently, dilating cardiomyopathy, comprises disorders of varied etiology. Most oftenly the pathogenetic mechanism or causative agent remains unknown. The significance of inflammatory processes, i.e. myocarditis in a wider sense as the etiologic factor has been debated for many years. In a few instances, especially in children and newborns viral infections can be incriminated. In adults this etiology can be ascertained only in rare instances. And it has remained entirely uncertain if, or under which circumstances, and how often virus myocarditis can lead to a chronic disorder of the heart, namely dilated cardiomyopathy....
Selenium
The papers and reviews in the present volume are in part regular contributions submitted for publication in Biological Trace Element Research, and in part invited papers from participants of the International Symposium "Present Status and Perspectives of Sele nium in Biology and Medicine," held on May 2 and 3, 1987, at the Eu ropean Academy, Nonnweiler /Trier, FRG. Endothelium
The function and life span of endothelial cells have a large impact upon the quality and expectancy of an individual's life. During low perfusion, the adaptation of different cells to hypoxia precipitate the aggressive progression of diseases. Although the clinical studies have convincingly shown that endothelial dysfunction occurs whenever the biological functions or bioavailability of nitric oxide are impaired, in all these scenarios, the role of endothelial cell-destructive process cross-talk is yet poorly understood.
