Writing Great Tom
Writing Great Tom was T. S. Matthews's backup project as he worked on the first major biography of T. S. Eliot, Great Tom: Notes Towards a Definition of T. S. Eliot, published by Harper & Row in 1973. So many barriers were put in his way that he thought he might not be able to complete the project. He decided to keep this record in reserve, as a possible alternative publication. In the end, he did finish and publish Great Tom, and the record of his struggles to write the book was filed away. Writing Great Tom is relevant today as the inside story of a writer's struggles. Readers will get a direct, intimate look at the challenging work biographers do, especially when dealing with guardians of the flame. Scholars who have dealt with the Eliot Estate identify with Matthews's experiences and learn more about the literary worlds in which Eliot (and Matthews) lived. Writing Great Tom also shows how two women important in Eliot's life - his first wife, Vivien Haigh-Wood, and his companion of many decades, Emily Hale, who are now the subject of a variety of recent books - were first brought into view.

"Jottings to the End of His Days" by T. S. Matthews began a few years before he turned 80. Since the last one appeared in 1990 only months before his death (12 days shy of his ninetieth birthday) they are, in the main, the jottings of an octogenarian. They don't seem so, except for those concerned with becoming and being old and those contemplating death. Most seem to have too much bite or juice to have come from the pen of an old man. They were almost invariably written down on little scraps of paper, never bigger than an old envelope, usually at night with some drink in him, though some were the product of the very early morning before anyone else was awake.
