1 Introduction Imagine a virtual world with digital creatures that looks like real life, sounds like real life, and even feels like real life. Imagine a virtual world not only with nice three dimensional graphics and animations, but also with realistic physical laws and forces. This virtual world could be familiar, reproducing some parts of our reality, or unfa miliar, with strange “physical” laws and artificial life forms. As a researcher interested in the sciences of complexity, the idea of a conference about virtual worlds emerged from frustration. In the last few years, there has been an increasing interest in the design of artificial environments using image synthesis and virtual re...

Advanced Computing and Systems for Security

This book features extended versions of selected papers that were presented and discussed at the 7th International Doctoral Symposium on Applied Computation and Security Systems (ACSS 2020) held in Kolkata, India on February 28–29, 2020. Organized by the Departments of Computer Science & Engineering and A. K. Choudhury School of Information Technology, both from the University of Calcutta, the symposium’s international partners were Ca Foscari University of Venice, Italy and Bialystok University of Technology, Poland. The chapters cover topics such as biometrics, image processing, pattern recognition, algorithms, cloud computing, wireless sensor networks and security systems, reflecting the various symposium sessions.

Nonlinear Functional Analysis and its Applications

As long as a branch of knowledge offers an abundance of problems, it is full of vitality. David Hilbert Over the last 15 years I have given lectures on a variety of problems in nonlinear functional analysis and its applications. In doing this, I have recommended to my students a number of excellent monographs devoted to specialized topics, but there was no complete survey-type exposition of nonlinear functional analysis making available a quick survey to the wide range of readers including mathematicians, natural scientists, and engineers who have only an elementary knowledge of linear functional analysis. I have tried to close this gap with my five-part lecture notes, the first three parts ...

The two volume set, CCIS 288 and 289, constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the First International Conference on Communications and Information Processing, ICCIP 2012, held in Aveiro, Portugal, in March 2012. The 168 revised full papers of both volumes were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The papers present the state-of-the-art in communications and information processing and feature current research on the theory, analysis, design, test and deployment related to communications and information processing systems.

Finite and Infinite Dimensional Analysis in Honor of Leonard Gross

This book contains the proceedings of the special session in honor of Leonard Gross held at the annual Joint Mathematics Meetings in New Orleans (LA). The speakers were specialists in a variety of fields, and many were Professor Gross's former Ph.D. students and their descendants. Papers in this volume present results from several areas of mathematics. They illustrate applications of powerful ideas that originated in Gross's work and permeate diverse fields. Topics include stochastic partial differential equations, white noise analysis, Brownian motion, Segal-Bargmann analysis, heat kernels, and some applications. The volume should be useful to graduate students and researchers. It provides perspective on current activity and on central ideas and techniques in the topics covered.

The book is logically divided into 5 main categories with each category representing a major skill set required by most security professionals:1. Coding – The ability to program and script is quickly becoming a mainstream requirement for just about everyone in the security industry. This section covers the basics in coding complemented with a slue of programming tips and tricks in C/C++, Java, Perl and NASL. 2. Sockets – The technology that allows programs and scripts to communicate over a network is sockets. Even though the theory remains the same – communication over TCP and UDP, sockets are implemented differently in nearly ever language. 3. Shellcode – Shellcode, commonly defined...

This year’s meeting marked the Eighth International Symposium on Graph D- wing. The organizing and program committees worked hard to make this year’s symposium possible, and we were delighted that so many people came to - lonial Williamsburg, Virginia, for three days of the latest results in the eld of graph drawing. As in previous years, the review process was quite competitive. We accepted 30 out of 53 regular-length submissions, and 5 out of 15 short submissions, for a total acceptance ratio of 35 out of 68, or 51%. This year’s program featured several new developments in the eld. Four di erent approaches for handling very large graphs were presented in a session on force-directed l...
