This volume collects some of the papers presented at the 16th IARTEM Conference held in Florence in April 2022. It was a ’difficult conference’, held at a time when the pandemic was still present, and therefore an important opportunity to resume a dialogue that seemed to have been interrupted. The richness of the content, which is the result of the reflections of authors from all over the world, allows us to provide a precise scenario of the research state of art in the field of textbooks and digital resources for teaching.

In the north-east of Italy the sites of the Cold War represent an excellent opportunity to enhance the landscapes and cultures of the places where they are located. By their nature these sites were part of an international and intercontinental technological and military context. Gathering theoretical insights and design practice for the enhancement of these important sites, this book collects different international experiences around the theme of the reuse and architectural design of recently abandoned military areas to try to awaken attention to these important territorial signs that are in danger of disappearing.

Human Economics

The term “human economics” is sometimes used within economic theory with the hope of repositioning economic discipline as a human and social science, but with scarce success. Indeed, although great economists have always carefully considered human nature, it has been largely neglected in modern economics. This book explores the potentials of a human economics, arguing that the complexity and peculiarities of human nature should be central to the study of economics. Complex economic phenomena are subject to laws and limits that reveal their internal order in spite of the apparent randomness and unpredictability. The book embraces the contributions of thinkers and economists who have tried...

Twenty-First Century Arab and African Diasporas in Spain, Portugal and Latin America

This volume considers the Arabic and African diasporas through the underexplored Afro-Hispanic, Luso-Africans, and Mahjari (South American and Mexican authors of Arab descent) experiences in Spain, Portugal, and Latin America. Utilizing both established and emerging approaches, the authors explore the ways in which individual writers and artists negotiate the geographical, cultural, and historical parameters of their own diasporic trajectories influenced by their particular locations at home and elsewhere. At the same time, this volume sheds light on issues related to Spain, Portugal, and Latin American racial, ethnic, and sexual boundaries; the appeal of images of the Middle East and Africa in the contemporary marketplace; and the role of Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American economic crunches in shaping attitudes towards immigration. This collection of thought-provoking chapters extends the concepts of diaspora and transnationalism, forcing the reader to reassess their present limitations as interpretive tools. In the process, Afro-Hispanic, Afro-Portuguese, and Mahjaris are rendered visible as national actors and transnational citizens.
