Into the Great Wide Open is a book about a search for a form of practice in architecture. Practice here is understood both as a critical reflection of a status quo and its history, as well as forms of (active) intervention through designing and planning. The book is a fragmentary snapshot of an on going, constantly developing and altering process to find a place in the production and reflection of our built environment, and implicitly disputes the question: “What is to be done?”

Bound by Blood and Name
Johann Podoll (1820-1899) was the son of Christian Friedrich Podoll and Johanna Louise Melling of Radwonke, Co. Kolmar, Grand Duchy of Posen, Kingdom of Prussia. He married Anna Caroline Podoll, the daughter of Mathias Podoll and Ewe Rosine Birkholz, at Samoczyn, Co. Kolmar, Province Posen (status changed after 1836) in 1844. They spent 21 years of married life at Radwonke, where he farmed hereditary land. They emigrated to the USA in 1865, landing at the Port of New York. After their arrival, they settled on 80 acres of land in Mecan Twp., Marquette Co., Wisconsin. They also held land in Green Lake and Adams Counties. They were the parents of twelve children. Includes several generations of ancestors and descendants of this and other Podoll families in USA and Europe.

Spoils of the Kingdom
In Spoils of the Kingdom, Anson Shupe investigates clergy misconduct as it has recently unfolded across five faith-based groups. Looking at episodes of abuse in the Roman Catholic, Mormon, African American Protestant, white Evangelical Protestant, and First Nations communities, Spoils of the Kingdom tackles hard questions not only about the sexual abuse of women and children, but also about economic frauds perpetrated by church leaders (including embezzlement, mis-represented missions, and outright theft) as well as cases of excessively authoritarian control of members’ health, lifestyles, employment, and politics. Drawing on case evidence, Shupe employs classical and modern social exchange theories to explain the institutional dynamics of clergy misconduct. He argues that there is an implicit contract of reciprocity and compliance between congregants and religious leaders that, when amplified by the charismatic awe often associated with religious authorities, can lead to misconduct.
