At the doors of lexical access: The importance of the first 250 milliseconds in reading

Correct word identification and processing is a prerequisite for accurate reading, and decades of psycholinguistic and neuroscientific research have shown that the magical moments of visual word recognition are short-lived and markedly fast. The time window in which a given letter string passes from being a mere sequence of printed curves and strokes to acquiring the word status takes around one third of a second. In a few hundred milliseconds, a skilled reader recognizes an isolated word and carries out a number of underlying processes, such as the encoding of letter position and letter identity, and lexico-semantic information retrieval. However, the precise manner (and order) in which the...

The Septuagint Version of Isaiah and Cognate Studies

The present volume makes accessible once more the groundbreaking work The Septuagint Version of Isaiah (1948) by Isac Leo Seeligmann (1907-1982), accompanied by two studies that have to be seen as prolegomena to the book. Both studies were published originally in the Dutch language, and the English translation of one of them appears in this volume for the first time. Seeligmann aims to understand the Septuagint as a witness of Hellenistic Judaism striving to maintain the text's special character as a document of faith. At the same time all of Seeligmann's works edited in this volume are documents of the suffering of European Judaism during the time of National Socialism. The new edition prov...

Catecholamines and Schizophrenia reviews research linking catecholamines to schizophrenia. Topics include the relationship between stereotyped behavior and amphetamine psychosis, between antipsychotic drugs and catecholamine synapses, and between biogenic amines and behavior. The chemical neuropathology of schizophrenia, enzymology and regulation of catecholamine enzymes, and advances in histochemical technologies used in neurochemical pathology are also covered. This book consists of 47 chapters organized into six sections. After giving an overview of the pharmacology and physiology of stereotyped behavior, this book discusses the behavioral and biochemical aspects of amphetamine psychosis;...
