Wide-ranging correspondence concerning affairs of the Diocese of Connecticut and of the Episcopal Church throughout the world, chiefly with Bishops James Kemp and William Rollinson Whittingham, of Maryland. There is much material on education, particularly affairs of the General Theological Seminary (both the New Haven and in New York City), and of Washington College, later Trinity College, in Hartford, Conn., which Brownell founded, 1824-1837. Private comments and official correspondence concern many bishops, including Levi S. Ives, Philander Chase, Horatio Southgate, Henry C. Lay, Thomas Atkinson, and A.
