This book presents the diary of Captain Thomas Douglas Whitcombe, a young English gunnery officer who in 1827 participated as a volunteer in an expedition to relieve the Turkish siege of the Acropolis of Athens. Covering the period from winter 1826 to late summer 1827, the journal gives an eyewitness account of the actions of the Greek Army and its corps of European volunteers, including those known as the Philhellenes, and a view of the culture and society of Greece in the early 19th century. An introduction provides historical background for the Greek Revolution, a comparative analysis of existing published accounts of the 1827 expedition, and notes on the author and his manuscript. Three appendixes complement the journal, they present details of Whitcombe's family, the recollections of Whitcombe's daughter (with notes by Eliot), and biographical sketches of the European volunteers who served in the 1827 campaign.

Lord Selkirk

Thomas Douglas, the Fifth Earl of Selkirk (1770–1820), was a complex man of his times, whose passions left an indelible mark on Canadian history. A product of the Scottish Enlightenment and witness to the French Revolution, he dedicated his fortune and energy to the vision of a new colony at the centre of North America. His final legacy, the Red River Settlement, led to the eventual end of the dominance of the fur trade and began the demographic and social transformation of western Canada. The product of three decades of research, this is the definitive biography of Lord Selkirk. Bumsted’s passionate prose and thoughtful analysis illuminate not only the man, but also the political and economic realities of the British empire at the turn of the nineteenth century. He analyzes Selkirk’s position within these realities, showing how his paternalistic attitudes informed his “social experiments” in colonization and translated into unpredictable, and often tragic, outcomes. Bumsted also provides extensive detail on the complexities of colonization, the Scottish Enlightenment, Scottish peerage, the fur trade, the Red River settlement, and early British-Canadian politics.

On 4 December 1851, Thomas Douglas Bateson, agent to the Templetown estate near Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan, was murdered as he returned on foot to Castleblayney after visiting the estate's model farm at Corratanty. The murder sent shock waves from Castleblayney to Westminster. This book sets out to examine the murder in the context of landlord-tenant relations at a time of extraordinary socio-economic upheaval in the aftermath of the Great Famine. This work sets out to reappraise the motivation behind the murder in the broader context of the Irish land question. It questions whether the crime was part of a Ribbon conspiracy or simply a desperate measure taken by a desperate tenantry. It also elucidates the criminal procedure that led to the execution of three men and the acquittal of numerous.

Extraordinary Canadians: Tommy Douglas

Once voted the greatest Canadian of all time, Tommy Douglas was a prairie politician who believed in democratic socialism, the crucial role of civil rights, and the great potential of cooperation for the common good. He is best known as the “Father of Medicare.” Born in 1904, Douglas was a championship boxer and a Baptist minister who later exchanged his pulpit for a political platform. A powerful orator and tireless activist, he sat first as a federal MP and then served for 17 years as premier of Saskatchewan, where he introduced the universal health-insurance system that would eventually be adopted across Canada. As leader of the national NDP, he was a staunch advocate of programs such as the Canada Pension Plan and was often the conscience of Parliament on matters of civil liberties. In the process, he made democratic socialism a part of mainstream Canadian political life. Giller Prize–winning author Vincent Lam, an emergency physician who works on the front lines of the health-care system, brings a novelist's eye to the life of one of Canada's greats.
