Vital Negotiations
Focusing on the field of health care and disease control as a field of policy that was of pivotal importance for the existence and stability of European colonies in the south-eastern areas of the North American continent, the book analyzes modes of local organization and regulation in French Louisiana and British South Carolina during the first half of the eighteenth century. The work shows that, in spite of completely different imperial strategies and systems of rule, striking similarities existed between French and British colonies with regard to governance modes and the nature of agents involved in political organization. This attests to the fact that governance practices on the local and the colonial levels were informed at least as much by local conditions as by the nature of the empire to which the colonies respectively belonged. The work offers a fresh and unique perspective on the realities of colonial rule in early modern North America, thus challenging traditional notions which stress the differences between the French and British colonial empires in North America with regard to administrative practices.
My Operatic Roles
This book was produced for Placido Domingo's 60th birthday and the 40th anniversary of his debut in a major role (Alfredo in La Traviata in 1961). It is a portrait of the artist in his own words, through his own portrayals of the various operatic heroes he has so grippingly and hauntingly brought to life over the years. The series of interviews took place all over the world over several years, from Seville to New York to Vienna and home in Acapulco. Yang-Mills Connections on Orientable and Nonorientable Surfaces
In ``The Yang-Mills equations over Riemann surfaces'', Atiyah and Bott studied Yang-Mills functional over a Riemann surface from the point of view of Morse theory. In ``Yang-Mills Connections on Nonorientable Surfaces'', the authors study Yang-Mills functional on the space of connections on a principal $G_{\mathbb{R}}$-bundle over a closed, connected, nonorientable surface, where $G_{\mathbb{R}}$ is any compact connected Lie group. In this monograph, the authors generalize the discussion in ``The Yang-Mills equations over Riemann surfaces'' and ``Yang-Mills Connections on Nonorientable Surfaces''. They obtain explicit descriptions of equivariant Morse stratification of Yang-Mills functional on orientable and nonorientable surfaces for non-unitary classical groups $SO(n)$ and $Sp(n)$.
The Schieltz Family History
Jean Pierre Schiltz, son of Dominique Schiltz and Marie Reiter, was born in 1824 in Aubange, Belgium. He married Marguerite Huberty (1839-1926) in 1858 in Ohio. He died in 1898 in Darke County, Ohio. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Ohio.
The Dynamics of Modulated Wave Trains
The authors investigate the dynamics of weakly-modulated nonlinear wave trains. For reaction-diffusion systems and for the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, they establish rigorously that slowly varying modulations of wave trains are well approximated by solutions to the Burgers equation over the natural time scale. In addition to the validity of the Burgers equation, they show that the viscous shock profiles in the Burgers equation for the wave number can be found as genuine modulated waves in the underlying reaction-diffusion system.
