The Porter Hypothesis and the Economic Consequences of Environmental Regulation

  • Categories: Law

Combining the public choice literature on political decision making with the Neo-Schumpeterian literature on innovation, this valuable new book develops a conceptual model of how environmental regulation is designed. The author presents a novel perspective on the Porter Hypothesis, arguing that the effect of environmental regulation is too weak to induce technological change. This implies that environmental policy intervention has little, if any, economic consequences which has significant repercussions for environmental decision-making. Since radical technological advance is unpredictable, this implies that environmental regulation induces, at the very most, incremental improvements of exis...

Innovative Activities of Multinational Enterprises in Austria

This book contributes to ongoing policy discussions on the internationalisation of innovation. Foreign-owned enterprises account for a rising share of national innovation expenditures and have become key actors in the national innovation systems of almost all OECD countries. Their new roles give rise to both hopes and concerns. The author examines the innovative activities of foreign-owned enterprises in Austria, a country with a huge share of overseas R&D investment. Empirical analysis reveals that foreign-owned enterprises exhibit a superior innovation performance compared to domestically owned enterprises. The performance differences, however, can be explained by factors such as firm size, sectoral affiliation, and export intensity, rather than by the ownership status. With respect to policy, the results neither confirm fears that foreign ownership could lead to an erosion of innovative activity in the host country, nor do they provide arguments for specific incentives to attract foreign-owned enterprises. Innovation policy should instead try to foster innovative capabilities of both foreign-owned and domestically owned enterprises.

Social Networks and Knowledge Spillovers

There has been much discussion about the importance of networks for regional economic development and knowledge dissemination. However, the inflationary use of the notion networks is often based on rather metaphorical, at worst fuzzy meanings. This book explores ways for more rigorous research on knowledge networks, critically discussing quantitative social network analysis. A theoretical framework for meaningful interpretations in quantitative network research is developed. Afterwards, the monograph links social network analysis to research on localised knowledge spillovers. Here the role of communities and networks of knowledge workers is investigated. The book illustrates how social network analysis can provide fruitful perspectives for further research on knowledge flows. (Back cover)

The Blame Game

Dr Flynn covers all of the above questions and more in his new book The Blame Game. A must-read for anyone interested in environmental issues in Ireland. Ireland's record in the field of environmental protection is one of the worst in Europe, and this book explores the reasons why. It examines the evolution of Irish environmental policy over the so-called 'Celtic Tiger' years of Ireland's economic boom while looking to the future as well. It considers why Ireland's environmental performance has been so lacklustre during this period, and what scope exists for improvement. The emphasis is placed primarily on institutional aspects of Irish environmental policy. In particular, this book offers a...

Prinzipale, Agenten und ökonomische Methode

English summary: Economic models are not neutral reflections of reality; they always convey a certain view of the issues under investigation as well. Matthias Meyer deals with this aspect of economic theory formation in an analysis of the works of Max Weber and F.A. von Hayek. In accordance with this, the critical examination of economic models has to be expanded to include its heuristic dimension. Looking at the normative principal-agent model from this perspective, the author shows how a regulation mentality has slowly crept into economics, a mentality which is actually inconsistent with economics itself. Using the theories of Ronald Coase and Oliver Williamson, the author has developed an...
