White Shadows
The starting point of White Shadows by Winne Lievens were her grandmother's memories of the Belgian Congo. At the age of 19, she moved to Congo to work as a teacher, and ended up meeting her husband and raising their five children there. When Congo became too unsafe, the family returned to Belgium. But the nostalgia for Africa remained great. Winne's grandmother described her time in Congo as the most beautiful time of her life. As a child, Winne Lievens used to be fascinated by her grandmother's TV room, where countless objects and photographs kept the memory of Congo alive. It was in this TV room that Winne first came into contact with this distant and exotic past. Now, as an adult, she considers this past from a different perspective, one in which also the social vision of a colonial past has its place. In White Shadows both that naive, childlike gaze and the adult, informed gaze are represented. This book was created for the occasion of the exhibition with the same title in Arrière-pensée, Ghent.

In de lente en zomer van 2015 werden de idyllische dorpen Mullem, Huise, Wannegem en Lede ingenomen door kunst. Op 14 augustus openen 8 weekends vol kunst, in de charmante dorpen van de Vlaamse Ardennen, met een nieuw, volwaardig podiumprogramma. Naast beeldende kunst is er theater, concerten en films.0Deze catalogus wil vooral geen catalogus zijn maar is een kunstwerk op zich. Het is bijna onmogelijk om een neerslag te maken van een tentoonstelling die je in beweging moet beleven, in het landschap en in het moment. Die Studie verfolgt das Ziel, das geschriebene Alltagsdeutsch in der neueren Sprachgeschichte als sprachliche Normallage zu beschreiben, deren Entwicklungen die Tendenzen der Gegenwartssprache erst verstehbar machen. Gestützt auf Analysen von Auswandererkorrespondenz des 19. Jahrhunderts plädiert »Sprachgeschichte von unten« für einen doppelten Perspektivenwechsel in der Sprach(geschichts)forschung: zum einen für eine Hinwendung zum Sprachgebrauch breiter Bevölkerungsschichten und zum anderen für eine Fokussierung auf die soziokommunikativen Fundamente der modernen Kultursprache Deutsch.
Marthe Donas
A pioneer of avant-garde art, Belgian artist Marthe Donas is gradually being rediscovered internationally. This is the first monograph in English wholly dedicated to her oeuvre. It encompasses both her surviving work and much of what has been lost and probably destroyed during the Second World War. Written by Peter J. H. Pauwels with the collaboration of Kristien Boon, the book contains high-quality reproductions of the artist's drawings and paintings - including Nature Morte M, Portrait de Georgette, Jeux and Composition abstraite N°5 - as well as a chronological list of her exhibitions. Using a simple, accessible language, the authors interweave close biographical details with insightful criticism, allowing us to understand the evolution of her style from cubism to the abstract. Donas was a friend of many important figures in the avantgarde, and exhibited with all the great of the period, from Picasso to Mondrian, Braque to Modigliani. But more importantly, she was an exceptional artist in her own right.
