IWitness

During a long and distinguished career in photojournalism, Tom Stoddart has documented many of the world's most incredible events, including the scourge of famine and AIDS in Africa, the strife of civil war in the Balkans, and the monumental destruction of a superpower in Iraq. His powerful, humanistic, black-and-white photographs have won him many awards and the international respect of his peers. iWITNESS is as much a celebration of Stoddart's exceptional career as a photojournalist as it is a merciless diatribe on the day-to-day business of how the world conducts itself. This is an intensely personal view by an observer who refuses to believe that human beings can only exist in conflict with one another and the environment they inhabit. An exhibition of this work will be mounted in London in the summer of 2004 and will then travel worldwide.

SARAJEVO

"In 1992 British photojournalist Tom Stoddart was gravely wounded in Sarajevo, but he returned to the besieged city during the grueling winter of 1993 to record the plight of its remaining citizens in their daily efforts to survive destruction, bereavement, and fear." "Portraying not frontline fighters but the ordinary citizens who endured the brunt of the siege, the images created by Stoddart during his two visits convey the trauma of war in the faces and gestures of those forced to assimilate it into their daily lives. Women carrying shopping bags run for cover across an intersection that became known as Sniper Alley; a cellist breaks down in tears after performing a requiem for a dead fri...

The Soul of the Camera

The Soul of the Camera

As both an art form and a universal language, the photograph has an extraordinary ability to connect and communicate with others. But with over one trillion photos taken each year, why do so few of them truly connect? Why do so few of them grab our emotions or our imaginations? It is not because the images lack focus or proper exposure; with advances in technology, the camera does that so well these days. Photographer David duChemin believes the majority of our images fall short because they lack soul. And without soul, the images have no ability to resonate with others. They simply cannot connect with the viewer, or even—if we’re being truthful—with ourselves.

The story of Passenger Pigeon, and what we can learn from its demise 100 years ago. September 1st, 2014 marked the centenary of one of the best-documented extinctions in history – the demise of the Passenger Pigeon. From being the commonest bird on the planet 50 years earlier, the species became extinct on that fateful day, with the death in Cincinnati Zoo of Martha – the last of her kind. This book tells the tale of the Passenger Pigeon, and of Martha, and of author Mark Avery's journey in search of them. It looks at how the species was a cornerstone of the now much-diminished ecology of the eastern United States, and how the species went from a population that numbered in the billions ...
