Dutch description: In Door boekband bekoord wordt ingegaan op een onbekend facet van de boekgeschiedenis: de boekbandontwerpen van protestants-christelijke uitgevers tussen 1892-1940. Tientallen kunstenaars gaven het uiterlijk van boeken vorm. De Universiteitsbibliotheek Groningen bezit een uitgebreide verzameling - ruim 5.000 stuks - industriële boekbanden uit deze periode, waaruit voor deze publicatie en de gelijknamige tentoonstelling het protestants-christelijke deel is gelicht. Daarnaast wordt in Door boekband bekoord aandacht besteed aan de protestants-christelijke leescultuur en aan de vignetten van de uitgevers uit deze kring.

The Influence of Abraham Cohen de Herrera's Kabbalah on Spinoza's Metaphysics
In this book the author seeks to find historiographical and textual evidence that Abraham Cohen de Herrera ‘s main kabbalistic work, Puerta del Cielo, influenced Spinoza’s metaphysics as it is expounded in his later work, the Ethica. Many of the most important ontological topics maintained by the philosopher, like the concept of the first cause as substance, the procession of the infinite modes, the subjective or metaphorical reality of the attributes, and the two different understandings of God, were anticipated in Herrera’s mystical treatise. Both shared a particular consideration of panentheism that entails acosmism. This influence is proven through a comparative examination of the writings of both authors, as well as a detailed research on previous Jewish philosophical thought.
Private Libraries and their Documentation, 1665–1830
The essays in Private Libraries and their Documentation revolve around the users and contents of early modern private book collections, and around the sources used to document and study these collections. They take the reader from large-scale projects on historical book ownership to micro-level research conducted on individual libraries, and from analyses of specific types of primary sources to general typologies and overviews by period and by region. As a result of its comparative approach and active engagement with questions regarding the nature, selection and accessibility of sources, the volume serves as a guide to sources and resources in different regions as well as to state-of the-art methods and interpretational approaches. Publication of this volume in open access was made possible by the Ammodo KNAW Award 2017 for Humanities.

The Spanish and Portuguese Jews of seventeenth-century Amsterdam cultivated a remarkable culture centered on the Bible. School children studied the Bible systematically, while rabbinic literature was pushed to levels reached by few students; adults met in confraternities to study Scripture; and families listened to Scripture-based sermons in synagogue, and to help pass the long, cold winter nights of northwest Europe. The subject of personal and moral identity is at the centre of interest, not only of academic research within disciplines such as philosophy and psychology, but also of everyday thinking. This is why the Neth erlands School for Research in Practical Philosophy and the Institute for Ethics of the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam took the initiative to bring together scholars from various disciplines, interested in the subject.
